I'm afraid that your statement regarding there being no tax on a service may not be entirely accurate. It would depend upon the sales tax laws of the state to which you had the item delivered. Some deem S&H taxable while others do not.
When it comes to whether or not you are being robbed, you will probably have to take that up with your state legislature. I'm afraid that eBay is bound by law to collect and remit the taxes levied by your state.

Frankly, I don't believe you're being robbed. Go to the website below to get the latest info:
Alas! Does your state charge sales tax on shipping, where you're having your items delivered?

It all depends on the state where the buyer is located. Some states do collect sales tax on the shipping charge. eBay is required by law to collect and remit to those states. It's actually a benefit to some buyers for the seller to separate the item price and shipping as some states don't require sales tax on shipping charges.

Ebay is an unchecked taxing authority! I noticed on a recent sale to Illinois ebay taxed the buyer 25% more than their state sales tax. This included taxing shipping. I believe ebay has and is exploiting their unchecked tax power. Along with other ecommerce. You got to vote for LESS GOV NOT MORE.

Do you realize the state rate is not the only sales tax? Municipalities add their local rate to the state rate.
In FL the general state sales tax is 6%. And they allow a local sales tax up to 1.05%. I'm sure they do the same thing in IL.

Illinois is one of many states that charge sales tax on the whole transaction including shipping.
All of the sales tax money goes to the states; eBay themselves isn't taxing anybody nor keeping the tax money. Some states allow local authorities to add-on taxes, so different locations have different rates.

Almost 14 months -- one year and two months -- after this thread has its last entry, you revisit here to spout your opinions and you start with an absolute untruth, aka a lie: "eBay is an unchecked taxing authority."
eBay is not a taxing authority. Never has been. Neither is Sears or 7-11 or any of your local automobile dealerships. Taxing authorities are governments. Governments = nations, states, counties, cities, townships, villages, parishes, boroughs, whatever they are called where you live.
Now, you have a choice. If you find that a can of soda costs more at a supermarket than it does at your local 7-11, or the other way around, you have to decide where you will spend your money to get the most for it. eBay may not be for you.
