Do returns time out?

I know this has been asked, but I am so confused by the different answers and eBay explanation on their page is of no help at all. Hence, asking again in case someone has had this recently happen.

Buyer purchased an item, received it on May 13th. Opened a return on the 18th, claiming they ordered by mistake, did not authorize the credit card purchase. I accepted the return. The buyer was responsible for return shipping according to the return details. As of yet, the buyer has not indicated in the return section that they have shipped it out, nor have I received anything. I got an email from eBay askign if the item had been returned. There email says the buyer indicated they shipped it. That might just be a bot talking because there is no way it should have taken this long.

My question? Should I contact the buyer? Should I call eBay. I hesitate to do this, because I have a feeling the buyer still has the item and I don't want to trigger an automatic refund if that is possible.

Nvr mind. After a week of searching this, just after I asked the question I found the answer. The answer is yes, they time out. http://pages.ebay.com/seller-center/faq/returns.html#other-returns-questions

I kept looking in the wrong area.
