Damaged in shipping

Here’s my situation, I sold an antique, highly collectible item that was damaged by the postal service. I clearly had no returns on the listing, how should I go about solving this? Thanks.

You will need to refund the buyer and file a claim with your shipper (USPS, UPS, FEDEX) for the insurance...

...you did purchase insurance right???

Any seller's "no returns" policy gets over ridden by eBay's Money Back Guarantee (MBG).  You need to have the buyer file a case in  the Return Center and then you as the seller need to follow the steps to either pay for return shipping (refund WHEN received) or just refund the buyer.  Buyer is NOT required to "prove" anything to you, they just need to file a case for a 'not as described' reason.

Here are my long form thoughts on sellers with "no returns" policies:

No returns does not apply if the item does not match the description in the listing when it arrives. As stated, you will have to refund. As for shipping insurance, expect that to be denied due to "poor packing".  Unless it was very well packed. That is double boxed with bubble wrap between the two boxes and there is serious damage to the outer box. Then you stand some chance.

Priority mail is automatically insured and the buyer can file a claim on their end which is better if you are a reseller because they will have the invoice, box and materials shipped which must be kept for postal inspection when needed. The buyer will get the refund, not the seller. It makes more sense to do it this way, not the reverse. Especially if it's an item that cannot be immediately replaced.

USPS insurance at best is a very delayed payment.  Insurance claims are often denied as USPS will not pay for shock damage.

Buyer should not wait for weeks for a refund.

Sellers are responsible  for the items arrival in good condition.

Buyer recourse via eBay could expire waiting for USPS
