A buyer has initiated a fraudulent return against me claiming item was not as described. I accepted it because I had no choice and didn't want to lose the item. When I receive it back can I take photos of it proving that the excuses provided in the "not as described" reasons in the return are phony to try to get the case settled in my favor? I believe this type of fraud should disqualify a buyer from being covered under the money back guarantee and I should not have to refund.

eBay will tell you that they have no way to authenticate the photos and will not reverse their decision based on that. Hopefully you will get the item back in saleable condition. That's about all you can hope for.

@djnewborn
Once you get the item back and the buyer has been refunded, you can report the buyer for abusing the MBG.
If won't help you, but if the buyer get to many complaints, they can loose their buyer protection.

You can take photos and escalate the claim to eBay. However, it is unlikely you will win. They usually close in the buyer's favor.
I would refund the buyer, then file an appeal. I haven't had that scenario in awhile (late 2019 was last time), but eBay has reviewed photos in an appeal for me before.

"... and I should not have to refund."
When you get it back, you won't need the buyer's money anymore.
I am truly hoping that your expensive ring comes back to you at all. When it does... sell it locally. Good luck!
