Buyer wants to change shipping address after label has been Printed.

Whats the best way to handle this. It is being shipped in flat rate package. Is it possible to just mark package with a fowarding address. Customer moved and forgot to change ebay and paypal address.

Thanks for any input.

Dennis

If you change the shipping label address, then you lose all seller protection from ebay and paypal.

if you know your buyers and its not a big risk then you can try it, but if they pull a case you will lose. hope this helps

also ebay will tell you to cancel the sale. . again, if you trust that buyer from what you gathered on a phone call etc, then its up to you. but if you havent built a rapport with a customer, sometimes the safest thing is to cancel for buyers address. but dont do it without sending the buyer a message trying to work it out. let them know on ebay message (if you have to go this route) that you cannot change the address accrording to ebay policy.

those messages will save you at the end

Buyer is going to change address. The item is not a big loss if I do lose it but I don't want to get negative feedback or dings for the way I handle it. I might look at reprinting the label if he has changed his address. I have no contact with buyer other than the email he sent and my reply.

It won't work that way. The buyer can't change the address on the item they already paid for.  You'd need to cancel and the buyer repurchase and use the correct address when they pay   Otherwise you ship the the wrong address and take the chance of losing a case

Contact the buyer and have them change their address on Pay Pal to the one that that want the package shipped to. Call Pay Pal after this and be sure they have done this. You can cancel a shipping label within 24 hours of printing it. Then purchase a new label with the correct address on it. Never take chances with shipping to an incorrect address.

If this is an incorrect address and you have email proof from the buyer stating that it is you can  aslo CANCEL the sale indicating 'WRONG ADDRESS" as reason and not get a defect. Call customer service and go over this with them to be sure. If buyer wants the item they can repurchase with the right address. Best for them to change it now.

We had a case similar to this with an incorrect address and the package floated around with USPS for 3 weeks until the buyer went to the post office to clear the issue up with the move. It's a big headache and even the buyer said they wished they had just changed the address.

The buyer needs to go to his post office and file a permanent change of address forwarding order. I think he can do it on-line, too. It's not rocket science.

As for this particular instance, though, I think if you still have the package in hand and it's not just a cheap item, you should explain to the buyer that you'll need to refund and have him pay again with his corrected address. Explain that eBay protections don't extend to packages whose address is changed after the payment is made. (You don't need to specify that it's only your protection that's lost by doing that. Smiley Wink)

By the way... I have some vague recollection of @Anonymous saying in a similar case that if the buyer's address change request is visible in an eBay message tied to that transaction, then eBay would honor that if a problem came up later, but (1) I may be wrong in my recollection of that, and (2) I don't know if I'd want to rely on that assurance in a big-ticket case, but I figured I'd mention this part anyway...

They are protected by eBay.  The buyer can still win with PayPal or a cc chargeback. The seller would have no protection either of those routes because of the eBay message requesting a address change

We are able to protect you in an eBay case if the address change is in the eBay messages. Since the buyer does have protection program options outside of eBay, it is generally in your best interest to cancel and resell to this member to get the updated address on the order details. I've seen some other great advice here, such as having them update their PayPal address and printing from there (this is also covered by our program), or if you have no concerns with this buyer simply moving forward with their request. I've personally made address changes when I felt there was nothing to worry about and had no issues, but there are steps to take if you want to be as safe as possible.

@Anonymous, please research and discover that updating the PayPal address will not change the shipping address.

Hey @tarpedge, I re-read my message and I see it wasn't as clear as I intended it to be - I was referencing cancelling the order and having the address updated on PayPal when a new checkout occured. While this still is not able to be adjusted after purchase has been made, if the seller and buyer cancel the transaction and then proceed with the sale a second time with updated information, then this would be an alternative option for printing the label. Sorry for the confusion!

Yes, this. Seller may have eBay protection against shipping to a different address if communication is via eBay messages, but that says nothing about claims filed via PayPal or CC. You would not retain your seller protection against INR if a claim was filed in PayPal.

Depending on the item, the value, and the communication with the buyer you can decide if you want to take the risk or if you'd prefer to work out a cancel & repurchase with new address.
