Havent had one of these in quite some time. Years ago it was simple. If the buyer never sent the return back you simply clicked a button and the case closed and seller was considered clear.
In todays ebay, when I go to this specific returns page, look at the details, there is nothing for me to press on or update or do. The item was suppose to be sent back by the 22nd of feb. Its now March 1st. The case hasnt automatically closed and there is no button to allow me to close it or escalate it. All I can do on this page is "refund" without getting my item back, or send buyer a message............to which I have already done apologizing they are unhappy and saying im happy to do a quick free easy return and refund once item received. Never got a response. Never got a tracking number. No return in hand.
What next? Im terrified that if I call a CS they will turn into a big deal and I will some how end up refunding, never getting item back, getting a defect, and pissing the buyer off to which I have no intent.

It will automatically close about 21 days after the "ship by" date and/or the last activity date. In other words, if you contact the buyer the 21 days starts all over again. Let it lay!.
HOWEVER I am unwilling to wait that long (which delays how soon I can relist it).
I have called CS many times in cases like this. DO NOT make a big deal. I usually say something like "he was supposed to mail it by XX and he hasn't. I can only assume he has changed his mind. Can I get this closed please".
THAT'S IT - NO DRAMA - NO LONG RANT- JUST A SIMPLE STRAIGHTFORWARD REQUEST.
Sorry for the all caps but that is important. Keep it casual and it has always been closed on the spot. And under those conditions NO REFUND is required.

Is calling CS the only way to end this without waiting the 21 days? And after 21 days and it automatically falls off do I end up with a defect for the buyer procrastinating?
Thanks for the response btw.
Calling CS will end it immediately. If you wait the 21 days then, yes, it will fall off with NO repercussions. But remember, having sent them a note the 21 days counts from the day of the note, not the day of the required return.
DO NOT LET PARANOIA BLIND YOU.
As I mentioned, I have done this many times. The proverbial piece of cake. You are aware of the adage K.I.S.S.
NO drama, NO rant, just a straightforward request and then BITE YOUR TONGUE.
They want to get off the phone as bad as you do. Just don't irritate them with a long rant.

they are more easily understood than anything over seas CS could be.
What do you mean by "over seas"?. ALWAYS call between 9AM and about 2PM Pacific time and you will get a genuine American in a U S office. If you call during other hours you get an overseas CS. Don't ever talk to them. Wait until tomorrow morning.

You can certainly wait, but so many things could happen between now and then. To include your buyer could suddenly ship the item back. So to protect your money, your selling account and your feedback, take a moment and call Ebay in the morning and have it closed for non compliance by your buyer. That will protect your money, account and FB.
Good Luck!

Yep.
This is the new ebay where they just love their sellers.
