why does the item description no longer auto populate?

We need way more detail about what you're doing in order to be able to help. Only thing I can offer right now is that if you're doing a Sell Similar (or "Sell an item like this") from another seller, you will get their category(s) and Title, but not their description. If you're doing a Sell Similar from one of your own listings, you should get everything copied over, include the item description.

oh sorry. when you enter the upc of item like a book it used to populate what the description was. not another item from another seller but first time entering it.  also like a cd, dvd, no description of first time of me entering it no description. hope this helps/

It only populates the description IF the Ebay catalog has something in it for that particular UPC.  

Ebay is still building the catalog.  So in the meantime make sure you put in a proper description.
