why am i not first in best match search?

ok i am trying to understand ebay search. maybe this is fruitless, but i am trying to learn. i did a search for  Dansco 7161. I have one for sale. there are 27 listed. mine listing comes in #6. i dont understand why i am not first. i am a trs, 1 day handling, free shipping, 30 day returns, 100% feedback, and the lowest price by far. i made the price lowest to test the search. I want to understand why my sales are very low. right now i only have that 1 listing but in the past i have had up to 1500+ listings at once but very low sales.

anyone have a clue?

Totally agree. Never seen much of a problem with searching except for the fact that you have to hit ending soonest all the time because best match is the standard search or what have you... I also agree GOOD LUCK TO ALL

Highest Sales Volume will get the nod over they type of seller that you are.

If somebody has 78,000 positive feedbacks and they are only 92.1  they  will be shown before you because they make eBay more money.  it's all about volume.

None of us actually have the inside track in HOW Cassini ranks listings on the page.  It looks to me like those other sellers are all pretty good, and certainly a few of them are HUGE sellers for eBay with thousands and thousands and thousands of positive feedbacks.  Who would you suggest eBay kick down below you in the search?

But the real thing is that using different search words, in different orders, produces different search results and placements.  So different placement depending on what the searching buyer types in:

(1)  Dansco 7161

(2)  Dansco 7161 Album

(3)  Dansco Coin Album 7161     ... etc.

So when we search for our own listings we strongly tend to use search words that have also strongly influenced our choice of listing title words.  That usually shows our listings high-ish on a page.

But for all the buyers out there that search using words we may not have included in our titles, our listings may be wayyyyyyyyy down on the page!  When I search for Dansco Coin Album 7161, your listing doesn't get seen until I've scrolled down to the THIRTY-FIFTH listing shown on the page!

Title words DO matter, but the hard part is trying to foresee which words the majority of buyers might use when they're shopping here.  Depending on the search words they use played against the title words we've used in our listing, we may show up top or be relegated to the end of the page.

That's what eBay tells us anyway.  A couple weeks ago when I spent a considerable amount of time on the phone with CS, I used the exact 4 first words in one of my listings to find it.  It was so far down the list that it was ridiculous.  Never mind that about 75% of the items that were above it didn't have all of the words.

At first the CS rep told me that it was showing up in the first spot.  I told her what my results were.  She said, "Did you search using all of the words in your title?"  I, of course, told her NO since eBay says the first 4 words are the most important.

When it was all said and done, she admitted that there was something wrong, and that my listings were not showing up properly and she was sending up to "management" to handle.

eBay promotes what eBay wants to promote.  PERIOD.  If they want your items hidden/buried in search, no problem.  Trying to figure out Cassini is like trying to figure out when the next coming of Christ or the end of the world is going to be.  Good luck with that.

Great! 45.8% down over the same time last year with 2x+ items listed. Are you impressed? I'm certainly not!

Not sure what the difference is between 1 & 6 position matters.........being on the first page is the important thing....

just my thoughts.

Or the second, or the third. I rarely go past that. First isn't always best though.

Everyone wants to be first. Yours is not the lowest price. Search has many factors. Defect rates, how new you are to selling, sell through rate etc. The good news is there are only 6 listed so anyone who searches will see ALL six items on a single page. Yours will be seen along with the other five for any buyer that is interested so it really doesn't matter.

As stated - there are many factors that decide best match. Some of the other higher items also are from top rated plus sellers who give 30 day returns and ship internationally. We have no idea what the OP's return rate is or defect rate.

I know that Ebay said that return rate is not a factor - but I'm going to say that it does factor into best match.

I am disturbed that people that I've learned alot from and admire seem to have gotten out of the wrong side of the bed today. There is no need to attack Mr C. He's lost a lot here due to Ebay changes and the overseas sellers who are favored and do not follow the rules we all do.

There have been far worse ranters and Ebay haters here and yet no one has spoken up to them but you do to a long time community member and friend to many of us. We will not always see eye to eye on how we view or interpret Ebay and their policies but we're all here trying to give advice and make it work or warn others about possible pitfalls.

There are 27 listed and you have to understand that niche of collector mentality. Being a former coin collector seller has it listed as new,but new would still have the cellophane theirs is missing the cellophane,so it would be considered used. In the old days of coin collecting buying new means new and a collector will spend a few more dollars to have that cellophane wrapper,so placement makes no difference its a dead in the water item right out of the chute....

Please excuse the fact that I misclicked on the wrong reply - I do think most here knew I was replying to goodluckselling if they've read the thread.

First - Best Match considers more than just 1 day handling, free shipping, 30 day returns, and price when scoring listings for Best Match.  For instance, in the past eBay identified "sales history" as a factor in Best Match.

Second - just because you are not first when you search does not mean that you are not first when others search.  For instance, in the past eBay identified "distance from buyer to seller " as one of the factors in Best Match.

Best Match involves dosens if not hundred of factors. I suspect that one of the reasons it is complicated (and changes often) is to prevent sellers from learning the algorithm and gaming the system.

Honestly, if there are only 27 listed, I wouldn't be worrying about Best Match placement.  You're going to be on the first page no matter what since it's not as if buyers have all that many to choose from.

Are you paying ebay to 'promote' your ad?

Evening Gracieallen,

Nice to see you pop in lately...missed you there for a few days...your the EARLY riser that is already posting before a lot of folks are even sipping their first cup of coffee.

The other good news is that your advice can keep the sellers activity right here on ebay...jump over to Ebaymotors and fill your cart up with grease! LOL

As others have said there a too many factors involved to figure out why and it really isn't a big deal. Now if you're listing in a really competitive category and you're consistently on the last pages...well, that's a problem. if you're on the first page, be happy.

This won't be the worst thing that ever happens to you as a seller. Promise wink
