unexpected PayPal hassle

I let my PP balance get too low so ordered a transfer from my bank yesterday. Today I needed to buy postage and got a message that the bank declined it. Several calls to PP and the bank and a visit to the postage program later the upshot was that a bot saw I ordered the transfer and decided that I didn't have money in my bank account to spend more since I linked my bank to my PP account. The rep manually approved the backup bank withdrawal.  So basically I spent over an hour and multiple calls to get an answer that I didn't like but at least was accurate. I will be monitoring my balance even more closely from now one! (spending a ton on PP for postage on orders...elsewhere).

That's why you charge a shipping fee when you sell stuff. Smiley Happy

Was it a negative balance? I got mine down to $.30 the other day, but it never did anything to me.

You don't need to have money on your PayPal account to buy postage.

If you don't have a balance then you need a backup .
The bank back up failed they aren't going to let postage get purchased without a bank or CC back up.
Correct?

A backup payment method allows you to send a payment even if you don’t have enough money in your PayPal balance. Your backup payment method can be a linked bank account, debit or credit card, or PayPal credit product.

That says send a payment, not print a label.  There have been several threads about this issue in the last couple of days.  One poster couldn't use a paypal balance for a label.

Who doesn't have a credit card or debit card registered to their PayPal account?

if your paypal balance is on hold, you cant use it.

I dont thnk you can use crdit card as backup to pay postage as the card processing company will charge Paypal a transaction fee.

say if you print a lable ,USPS charges 2.66,but Paypal has to pay a transaction fee of at least 10 cents, thats why it prefers bank acount as back up since ACH has no fee

Some of the responses have confused me. I called back and asked for a supervisor who tried to convince me that it was a bank problem, not a PayPal problem. Told her I'd already contacted the bank. She helpfully suggested that in future if I need to use the bank account as a backup payment option and I get denied, to call PP and have them go into the system and manually approve it. I said GREAT, standing in line at a store and being denied and having to go home and get it manually approved? What madness is this?

Well, the transfer went through and I'll be vigilant to not let my balance get too low in the future since this business of a backup funding source is not working (at least for me...)

Yes, I set up my bank account to be the backup but when I tried to buy postage (from Endicia, not ebay) it said the bank declined it but the bank said they never got a request to cover the payment. From the hour or more on the phone with PayPal it came to light that some bot decided to decline the payment. A rep had to go in and manually approve it, which is just nuts.
