state taxes, the collection by eBay has shut down my sales

I guess the only reason folks bought from Montana was to avoid their own state tax

Sorry? I don't quite understand . . . sales taxes are assessed based on where the item is delivered, not where it's purchased.

I'm not sure what that means.  Sales tax liability has NEVER been driven by the location of the product / seller.  It is the state in which it is shipped to.

So if you ship something to New York, Ebay will be collecting NY sales tax from the buyer and then remit it to the state of NY.  You being in Montana has no bearing on it at all.  You could be in Australia and shipping to NY.  The buyer in NY will still have to pay sales tax.

Online sales tax on Ebay started in January of 2019 for some states and as the year went along more and more states passed their laws requiring Ebay to do that.  We are now up to 38 states that Ebay has to collect sales tax for.

Your downturn in sales is more likely related to our current Health Crisis and nothing to do with sales tax which has been around for almost a year and a half now.

Frankly, I'm not quite following your reasoning.  Whether or not a buyer has to pay sales tax on purchases they make is determined by the state laws of the state to which they have it shipped, not the state it is purchased from.

Alas!  A lot of sales are down owing to the current virus situation.  Many people are out of work temporarily (hopefully) because of it and are pretty much putting off many non-essential purchases as a result.

well since 39/40 states are now collecting internet sales tax guess it's been an unanimous decision across the USA  and it is up to all buyers and sellers to be aware of it.

If you think it is theft, perhaps you need to contact your governing officials and let them know of your discontent.

This encompasses all sellers and buyers who purchase on the internet, no matter whether it is eBay, or some other selling site. The law requires this sales tax to be collected by eBay and other selling venues and submitted to the proper taxation authority for the buyer's state.

Buyers were always supposed to pay those taxes.  There is a place on state income tax forms for it.  It's just that it was not cost effective for states to try and collect those pennies. Now that they go ebay to do the "work", they can just enjoy the money.   It's not ebay's fault it is ans always the law.   Ask your lawmakers to sponser a bill to get rid of it

Have you missed what is going on out there....sales tax is not the reason your sales have dipped.

It is unlikely this is the reason your sales has gone down.  It isn't like they can go to Amazon, Etsy or some other site and buy the stuff without paying sales tax.

Sometimes it is just what we are selling is no longer in demand like it once was.  Try expanding what you are selling to some other products and see if that helps.

You might want to voice your opinion to your state representatives.  They are the ones that levy the taxes.

So you think all the roads, bridges, clinics, police, fire fighters, etc. etc. are free?

Since this thread was really just a veiled "All taxes are theft" rant, I think all that can be said has been said.

Except that people who think 'tax is theft' seem to change their mind right quick when their house is burning down and they demand those services...that their local taxes pay for.
