self-employed and stimulus package?

I tried to look up whether we can get a stipend from the stimulus package. What I read seemed to be saying we need to file for unemployment. Is there something else we should be doing, do you know? Do we have to reach the point of no sales to be eligible?

Someone should yell eBay to cut their store prices in half or give us 6 months free before we have to shut down! People are not buying like they were and most are purchasing from Amazon now. It's not like they would ever care anyway so i expect to just shut down and use Craigslist Letgo and other free sites!

Why?  I have not heard of any other similar site doing this.  Very few of my vendors are offering discounts for anything.  And with my personal finances I have not had many of my creditors offer me much of anything either.  But then it isn't their responsibility to do that.  I don't think it is a matter of caring or not.  Ebay has offered deferred fees and lots of free listings.

I know it is tough right now.  I feel it too.  I sincerely hope your sales increase very soon.

You may see if you can source some things that are more popular right now than collectibles.  Games, crafts, puzzles and the such are selling well as people are searching for things to do while they have so much time on their hands.  If you can, that may very well help you out.

Good Luck!

self-employed and stimulus package?

YES- Self Employed CAN NOW GET "UNemployment" due to the CARE Act of the Coronavirus Stimulus Package.  You don't get a lot- and it's via your state unemployment department--- and good luck trying to report ebay sales as there is ZERO guidance for what to claim or how to claim it--- but yes, self employed now are allowed to file.  Your state weekly benefit may be about worthless, but from end of March to End of July you may qualify for that $600 per week Federal "PUA" payment and that is something anyway!  FILE for unemployment even if you don't think you would qualify- LET THE EXPERTS TELL YOU IF YOU DO OR DO NOT QUALIfy!    ("PUA" or covid self employment unemployment benefits can go back to Feb 9 if you qualify and from that point till the end of March, the weekly award is minor and based on your income on your taxes for 2019, (I hadn't done mine yet, so I gave best estimates)  and then March 28 ish the 600 per week Federal Covid enhancement kicks in till the end of July-  you can receive both the PUA self employment unemployment payment, as well as the $600 per week.  If you remain in need, your PUA weekly unemployment can continue till Dec 20th, but that $600 expires at the end of July.... Still, it's something.....  Apply through your state unemployment insurance online.  ALSO while normal unemployment kicks in now without that week or two waiting period once you apply-- COVID UNEMPLOYMENT for SELF EMPLOYED can be back dated and paid all the way back to Feb 9- or when you first experienced the interruption of your income---  whichever is later.  So don't think if you've not yet applied that you've lost out on months of payments---  they will pay you for the past.

The problem is that it isn't set up to help ebay sellers how to file, and I sill don't know for sure how much your income has to have gone down in order to qualify---  some say you must experience 20-30% loss to file.  Ugh.  They do not make it easy- as if earning a living on ebay was EVER easy! 🙂

Someone making $75K for last few years should have enough saved up for a 6 month emergency fund if they live within their means.

Not if you live in a city where your mortgage payment is over 2K a month. (Friends of mine bought a house for 400K and are paying 1900 a month for their mortgage with 5% down). They make 100K between the two of them, if either of them loses their job, the ship will sink.

Could they have bought a $300K house instead? Or wasn't it nice enough, big enough or too far out?

If it's anything like where I live, 400k just gets you IN to the housing market.  If you want something cheaper, have fun with the 100 mile round trip commute.

ETA:  My 1700 sqft split level, which is 10 miles north of town (Seattle) in an older area, is valued at $750,000.  It's really absurd.

I missed this when it was originally posted... too many posts not enough time to read.

There's no such thing as a 300K house within 3 hours of Toronto. Not going to happen. People are spending 500K (for a cheap house) that's 2 hours from Toronto, and commuting by train for 4 hours every day to get downtown.

I got my condo for less than 300K (which was possible a year ago, now the same condos are selling for 389K). And I only got it because no one wanted to buy a house that had an 84 year old man pass away in his sleep in the master bedroom. I also only got it because I bought a house in 2004 which I had just sold (and split in the divorce) and had enough of a down payment that I could qualify for the mortgage by myself. (Around here it's two working people qualifying for mortgages, unless one of them makes a whole lot of money).

Of course.  People pay to live in those places for the perks.   For those making more than 75K in those perky places,  seems to me $1200 bucks isn't going to make a world of difference anyway.

If you're in certain industries (tech, medical research for instance) that's where the jobs are.

I'm here for work, but not the tech industry... my company has offices in all the expensive to live in cities - Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa, Toronto, Waterloo, Halifax. To cover areas we don't have offices, we have hired external personnel at a company that has about 100 offices across Canada. They get involved in anything out of reach (usually property claims or looking at damaged cars).

Yes they can apply for the  government unemployment and people that file a 1099 but work only for a specific company.

Why would you not want your daughter to take it? I doubt if your daughter agrees with you. There is no logical reason for her not to take it. I have never heard of such a thing that a parent would do for her own child.

This was cleared up long ago on this thread, besides that benefit no longer exists.  To it is a bit late to want to rehash the subject.

It doesn't have to come from her paycheck for her 'to pay for it'. The employer does have to pay that, which is money that they allocate for her being an employee. Her being there causes that money to be allocated.  The semantics that because they dont show it on your paycheck as received and then deducted doesn't negate the fact that her employment caused that payment to be made in the first place.

Yes.   "Unable to work from home" will disqualify an application.   Just got 14 of em for each week.  I showed income dropped in half due to less inventory and actual income was cut in half but denied.    The Pandemic has drastically affected my business as every week I go to at least 9 estate sales and 20 thrift stores.  I have only been to 1 estate sale in 10 months.  I can only get stuff online but now pay high prices.

I have no idea what to do.
