i had posted earlier but guess i explained wrong...at one time it was against ebays policy to make money on shipping cost..but i c listings where an item may b selling for .99cents with 24.00shipping..for a shirt..flat rate is only 7.20 so how are they getting away with charging people excessive shipping..

Since ebay is now getting their cut off the whole amount - item + shipping, it is now up to the buyer to hit the back button when they see these types of listings.

The seller is charged fees on the shipping cost, unlike back in the old days. They can't duck out on paying their fees anymore.
Look at the total cost. If it's reasonable, then buy. If it isn't, then don't.
Which is a better deal for the buyer: 99 cents + $24 shipping or $17.79 + $7.20 shipping? Right, they're both the same.
That said, sellers who do that find generally themselves losing sales and buyers, and frankly it just looks sleazy.

As far as I know it is no longer against eBay policy.
However, you can leave appropriate DSR's if you believe that shipping and handling fees are excessive. If enough buyers leave 1 stars for shipping cost- it will eventually damage the seller's account.
then again? Since the shipping fee is spelled out in the listing- if you think it's too high, then don't buy.

quite frankly, looking at the total cost (item price & shipping charge) and not stressing over how the seller chooses to list his item, is really the best way to look at this situation. realistically, the seller only "gets away with charging excessive shipping" if you buy the item. it is just as easy to move to anothher seller that you dont' have a problem with.......there are plenty out there..... WISHING YOU THE BEST OF LUCK!

Would you prefer that the shirt was listed at $24.99 with free shipping?

Thankfully neither DSRs nor feedback affect seller standing any more. Since the total cost is shown up front, and no one is forcing you to purchase from any particular seller, all you have to do is click that little back arrow button on your browser.

While DSR's no longer affect the seller's standing with eBay, they are public and I do check them as a buyer.

And they are just mere opinion. There have been plenty of instances over the years where sellers get their shipping DSR dinged even if they ended up paying more to ship than what they charged the buyer (sort of subsidized shipping), or where the shipping was exactly what they charged plus or minus a buck or two.
Heck, before eBay implemented the auto 5 stars if the seller used "free" shipping, sellers were still getting their shipping cost DSR slammed. Because a buyer can give any rating they want whether or not they are being truthful, DSRs for sellers are every bit as meaningless as feedback for buyers.

Is this a new seller that is doing it to try and get out of paying fees. Then yes, that is a problem.
Is this a seller trying to gain some type of advantage hoping the buyer will not realize it - then yes that is a problem.
I see no reason to do it the other way and imo is does appear sleazy.
How does the seller even justify that cost. And I wonder if a buyer wanted to get even, could he send it back overnight shipping, signature confirmation to get it to that cost, and would the seller then have to pay it.
I will not buy anything where the shipping costs more than the item itself.

So I guess you were not the purchaser of my vintage Singer sewing machine which I let go for about $34, but cost something like $42 to ship?
No, I knew you weren't, just pointing out that shipping is not always going to be less than the price of the item, especially if we are talking about older heavy items like my sewing machine.

It's possible that they are doing it to get around listing limits.

Personally I will not pay more for shipping than the cost of the original item unless it was a steal. Or if it was so unique I could not get it anywhere else.
Again that is jmo.

OK, so it is a seller trying to game the system to his advantage. Again sleazy and I would hit the back button.
