questions about promoted listings

Are promoted listings marked in search results.

Are the 'sponsored' listing at the end of the search results the promoted ones or a different ebay deal?

Also, if I open/look/leave a sponsored listing is the seller charged?

Now the big question - we're do price research for ... I don't  know, a 'metric shoehorn,' and search returns one which we open/look/leave. Later a person in our real store wants a book - we find/buy the cheapest one - turns out both are same seller's items, with the shoehorn being promoted but not the book.

Does the seller get charged because ebay thinks that we found the book because we open the shoehorn?

questions about promoted listings

In response to your third question:

It depends on what type of promoted listing the seller is using. If the seller is using Promoted Listing Standard the seller is only charged the ad fee once when their item sells. If the seller is using Promoted Listing Advanced the seller is charged the ad fee for all qualifying clicks on the listing when their item sells or the listing ends.
