I read a thread about someone else having issues with variations listings. Here is the problem I ran into this morning. I am trying to make color a variation. I got an error message that says color isn't a valid variation. "Add a valid attribute. For example Size Color or Material. ???? Can't fight stupid!

I was just working on a new listing and the same thing happened to me. There were two pre-selected Attributes that came up. When I removed them , by clicking the X on the attribute box, it would not let me enter my own attribute. However, when I left the pre-selected attributes in place, I was able to enter my own attribute and save it. The pre-selected attributes disappeared and my attribute remained when I saved to drafts.
I hope this makes sense.

This happens to me every time I "sell similar" instead of starting a new listing from scratch. If the OP is using sell similar I suggest starting a new listing from scratch.
I can confirm the same experience as @mcdougle4248 with new listings that you have to leave the pre-selected attributes before you add your own. It appears from the OP's screenshot that s/he is starting with no pre-selected attributes so mcdougle's post should solve the problem if the OP is already starting with a brand new listing.
I would discourage the work-around posted in the other thread (adding a punctuation mark) only because eBay treats variation attributes as item specifics. For example, if you use Color as an attribute then you go down to IS and fill in the Color field you will get an error message when you submit the listing. You won't be able to submit until you clear out what you put in the Color IS since it is already assigned at the variation level. Adding a punctuation mark will affect how the system reads it (and how external search engines read the data eBay feeds them) which is especially important if it's one of the standard IS the system looks for, such as Color.
