possible scam from buyer?

On May 18 at 3:55pm a buyer made an offer on a Buy-It-Now item of mine. Almost a full 24 hours later, on May 19 at 3:37pm this buyer paid. On May 19 at 3:50pm they sent me the following message:

I got a tremendous trouble, my son takes my account to buy this item. Really all my apologies and... do you can cancel the order? Please I promise correct to my child about of this. I hope you can give me support.

This seems suspicious to me. I'm worried that if I give them a refund as they've requested that they could wind up scamming me. I know with checks a common scam goes something like this:

  1. Someone gives you a check for $1,000 and they ask you to give them $500 back
  2. You comply with the request and give them $500 cash.
  3. The $1,000 check bounces a week or two later.

Is something like this possible with PayPal?

Like I said, the buyers story just seems highly suspect to me..

He found it cheaper or changed his mind, refund him with the buyer asked for cancel reason.

Paypal doesn't work that way.

You are over thinking this.  They didn't ask you to give them part of it back and they didn't ask you to refund more than you received.

Make sure you file the cancellation in Ebay as Buyer's Request.  Then there will be a button on the cancellation you can click that will refund the money they paid you.  It is simple and easy.

How did they pay?  Was it echeck.  If so, wait until it is verified in your paypal account and you get the OK to ship, then you can refund.  If it does not clear, then it is a wash.  Cancel using buyer requested to get your fees back minus .30.

If it is a regular paypal payment, and it is verified, then cancel using reason buyer requested.  You will get your fees back minus .30.

And then block him.
