The last few times I ran auctions my sell-through rate was low so I decided I would just list the stuff in my store at Fixed Price (I am talking about book lots for the most part). The only problem with that approach is I don't have the necessary fire in my belly to get it done even though I can do it at any time of day. Running auctions gave me the discipline to make the time in the evening to list them. I really need to get with the program because the stuff is piling up and does me no good unlisted.

I believe this is category specific on sell through rates (15 day totals). I was bored to tears today at work so I ran a spreadsheet on my sell through rate vs some sellers I follow. Yes, I was truly that bored! Out of the seven sellers myself included I was stunned. The seller that I truly admire had a 85 percent sale rate on auctions and 24 percent on BIN items. I had 35% auction and I was the middle guy. Amazingly though the mega lister had only 4 percent and dead last. The 85 percent seller had over 400 items sold in the 15 day period.
The main thing was every seller except one ( both auction and BIN where 8%) the auctions heavily outperformed BIN items.

Auctions and buy it now are such unpredictable things...
I made two auctions for junk drawer lots and they weren't very good lots at all (in my opinion) but one sold for $100+ and the other for $160 or so. I was shocked.
I started both at $19.99 starting price. So, what did I do? I put together two junk drawer lots 10x better in my opinion, aaaaand... they both sold for the starting price of $19.99 and one I think got an extra $3 bid.
On the other hand, I once found this random piece of costume jewelry for .25 cents at an estate sale and I was going to list it for $10 buy it now, but I listed it as a .99 cent auction and it ended up selling for $500... this was maybe two years ago.
So darned if you do, darned if you don't. You can't really form any real theories on whether auctions or BIN is ideal in a certain situation because these things are extremely unpredictable.
As for buy it now, I once had an item sit in my store for FOUR years at the BIN price of $4.99 + $2.99 shipping, and I raised the price to $20 buy it now + $2.99 shipping and it sold within hours... what the heck.
This place certainly gives me whiplash sometimes.
As for motivation, I will share a trick I use to motivate myself. I have an "item listing diary" and I turn it into a game. I have a notepad file on my computer with dates and with how many total items I listed on that date. Then, I try to out perform myself the next day. If I listed, say... 20 items on Monday, on Tuesday, I'll mentally challenge myself, being like: "Think you can go for 25 items today to beat Monday's score? Hmm... challenge accepted" - and believe it or not, I once listed over 300 items in a week by playing that silly game with myself. Yep, haha.

Now if only the payment rate heavily outperformed BIN items (fixed price, IPR)

My sell through rate is miserable but I'm not alone. The stuff that doesn't get sold is astronomical.
The clothing and jewelry catagories are the worst, in my opinion.

This is actually what causes me to focus too much on eBay, and not enough on the other items I sell on other venues. Since I run all .99 start auctions here, my sell through rate is approx. 100%. It's a lot easier to get motivated to get the next week's listings written when I know they'll all be sold shortly. The other stuff may not sell for a month, or for a year, and there is just no pressing need or motivation to get it done.
I fully understand why most sellers of most items won't list auctions at .99 start, and if I had low STR as a result, it would certainly not motivate me. If I don't have a new batch of listings for next week, I won't have any listings up next week, and I won't be selling anything here next week either.
Interestingly, eBay keeps me motivated. I consider eBay a week-to-week proposition, they might change policies or fees or search or whatever... I might be done selling here next week. The more it looks like it might implode any day, the more anxious I am to get it sold sooner rather than later... I don't want that stuff backing up. But I will always have other options to list slow moving Fixed Price listings for the other stuff... on numerous sites... another day.

Now if only the payment rate heavily outperformed BIN items...
That's one of those "it depends" things too. I don't think I've had more than one unpaid item in my last 500... and I completely removed the Buyer Requirement for Unpaid Item Strikes several years ago.

Whenever I receive free auction listing promos, sales go thru
the roof for me. A nice, strong cup of coffee helps keep me motivated.

Normally 90% pay within 24 hours. And the rest within 72 hours. I have some that contact me because they are bidding on more items and want to combine both weeks purchases. I don't mind that at all.
Again this al comes down to the category you sell in.

You are fortunate!
