offensive material policy is too strict

I understand the intent of this policy of being inclusive (nothing wrong with inclusion) but it's too strict, specifically with the part about caricatures and confederate flags.

Why?

Not everyone uses the confederate flag for racist reasons (I don't. I use it for heritage(I'm southern)).

plus the caricature part is too strict mentioning figurines, cartoons, historical advertisements, and golliwogs.

Hopefully I can provide updates or critique to your feedback.

It is important to consider the world around us when thinking about this policy.  It isn't just stuff that might be illegal to sell on line, but stuff that is causing far more unrest and upset in the US and world.

Think of the Tesla cars.  How much destruction happened to cars that private people owned.  People that had nothing to do with what Elon was doing in Doge, but because some people were so upset by his actions, they attacked innocent people because they were driving a car that Elon's company created and sold.

This was so wrong on so many levels.  Some symbols inspire such passion in people and they act badly because of it.  The Confederate Flag is one of those things.  Some are trying to rewrite history and destroy things of the past for whatever reason they have.

You said "Not everyone uses the confederate flag for racist reasons", while you are correct, enough people do.  It is a problem that Ebay doesn't want to have to deal with, so they don't allow the item to be sold here.

I know it can be frustrating.  But because of the world we currently live in, it is highly unlikely Ebay is going to change this any time soon.

spread the word. that's exactly what I said in the original post and the "indistinguishable" post just ignored that.

how could just seeing something alienate (feel isolated) them? I can't wrap my head around that. Especially if its a symbol (especially one that's popular with a different community), or a historical item.

It would be more alienating (feeling isolated) if for example southern rednecks who love the flag weren't allowed to sell the flag.

yes, covering up logos, symbols, flags, or whatever banned material, is a good idea.

As others have mentioned, whether or not we feel something is offensive doesn't matter. EBay makes business decisions about what should be allowed on their platform. That's it.

And many people consider the heritage represented by the confederate flag to be racist. … since that flag originally was flown by people who wanted to preserve slavery.

Most people seem to agree that slavery had at least a racist component … although I understand that others prefer to highlight the future wage-earning potential that slaves enjoyed because of having received free food, rent, and training.

Not sure if this has already been mentioned, but eBay does not have the time or the resources to individually survey any of its 130 million sellers about their perceptions of what eBay regards as offensive materials.

I got a speeding ticket a few years ago.  I was going fast because I was momentarily anthropomorphizing, believing that my dog was unhappy because he was as hungry as I imagined he was.

As the officer approached my window, I summoned my wits about me, and accepted the ticket with grace.

As for my dog, he initially turned his nose up at his food, as usual, and eyed me with envy as I removed some chicken Parmesan from the refrigerator.    And as usual, I eventually gave him some.

Ebay has 18 million active sellers worldwide.  There is also about 134 million active buyers on the site.
