ebay reports its Q2 results later today, Wednesday July 26.
Is ebay about to plummet into bankruptcy? Do you have your Plan B in place?
Is ebay continuing to add revenue from Ads, while GMV continues to sink, and buyer numbers decline?
Is ebay doing great, with increases in GMV, buyers and revenue?
All will be revealed.....sort of.

@my-cottage-books-and-antiques wrote:@valueaddedresource I might be mistaken, but I think it was only a few quarters ago that ebay was touting "17 million enthusiast" buyers....now it is 16 million. Given that ebay also says enthusiast buyers account for about 70% of ebay's total GMV, that reduction alone is a bit worrisome.
@my-cottage-books-and-antiques you're correct and what's more worrisome to me even than just reduction alone is the lack of transparency and even out right obfuscation eBay apparently seems to be playing at with the "enthusiast" numbers.
17 Million down to 16 Million and average annual spend from "above" $3000 to "approximately" or "roughly" $3000 - how much of a difference between "above" and "roughly"? Anyone's guess!
I only went back a year but here are direct quotes from either Jamie or CFO Steve Priest pulled from earnings call transcripts.
Q2 2022 - "Enthusiast buyers made up approximately 17 million of our active buyers in Q2...average spend among enthusiast buyers grew sequentially and remains over $3,000 annually."
Q3 2022 - "Enthusiast buyers accounted for approximately 17 million of our active buyers in Q3...average spend per user grew sequentially and continues to be healthy at over $3,000 per year."
Q4 2022 - "Enthusiast buyers accounted for over 16 million of our active buyers in Q4...average spend per enthusiast rose again sequentially and continues to be healthy at above $3,000 annually."
Q1 2023 - "Enthusiast buyers remained relatively stable sequentially at 16 million in Q1...and on average, spend approximately $3,000 annually."
Q2 2023 - "Enthusiast buyers was stable at 16 million in Q2...spend per enthusiast grew modestly year-over-year, averaging roughly $3,000 annually."

No suspense at all.
Ebay is dying.
This has already been stated by several posters here.
Come to think of it, they've been predicting that for 10-20 years.

STOP THE DRAMA!
It just seems like you're stirring up drama without any proof. Just false speculations. WHY?
Everyone needs to relax until the report comes out.
Bankruptcy? Come on!
I really can't believe you posted this because you have had good posts in the past.

My prediction:
GMV=decreased
Buyers= decreased
Ad/PL revenue=Increased
GMV: Ebay is facing stiff competition from other ecommerce platforms fighting tooth and nail for a piece of our pie.
Goldman Sachs puts the probability the USA will enter a recession by the end 2023 at 25%.
Buyers: Definitely decreased. As mentioned above; additionally, Temu, Mercari and Etsy are marketing towards the younger crowd and spending a whole lot of money on advertisements. Ebay was already in the midst of an all out attack on its remaining market share. Adding Temu to the mix is bad news for Ebay fashion and home utilities sellers.
Ebay Ad/PL Revenue: Increased: This is the one factor everyone of us can predict with 100% accuracy. Squeeze em' until they pop, let them rest, then try squeezing em' again...if that doesn't work, shake em'

I ONLY sell collectibles and for this category, Ebay will NEVER die. This is where collectors come to get that toy they had as a kid. I don't buy anything here that I can find in a brick & mortar store with the exception of some very hard to find diecast cars. I don't buy electronics here either. So maybe some categories will be harder for some sellers to make a buck. Frankly, I do not see this place dying out at all.

Here is another couple of good questions.
Is e-bay carrying any debt?
Who's debt is worse: e-bay or the US Gov't.?

I think that ebays best days are behind it
its like an aging rocker who is not going to be putting out any more hits but it keeps on trying
led zeppelin and pink floyd are still bringing in the bucks I would think from old album sales
sears and Kmart are what I associate ebay with, its a cruel comparison
ebay is still the best at what it does but its a fractured outlook now
consumers have way too many choices
ebay is still in the running if you ask me but its going to be an uphill battle for sure
ebay cant afford to coast, cause when you are coasting you are going downhill

@sextons-sweet-deals - I do believe the OP might have been at least slightly tongue in cheek. 😉

Ebay is not dying.
Reports from both digital companies and legitimate stock reports are more optimistic about ebay than other sites.
They are concerned about Etsy moving away from it's roots and lack of identity. There are concerns about Amazon and it's drop in sale in foreign countries like India. They are also concerned about companies like TEMU and Shein, taking from their customer base.
Ebay is also attracting younger buyers, something it has failed to do in past years.

ebay reports its Q2 results later today, Wednesday July 26. Is ebay about to plummet into bankruptcy?
Preliminary indications from reliable and knowledgeable sources say absolutely not. eBay does not stray too far from analysts' estimates.
All will be revealed.....sort of.
The same information will be revealed that has always been revealed.

The day someone (anyone) answers this question with any other platform, that is the day I will look elsewhere for a venue to peddle my stuff........
Me: "What do you think it's worth?"
Friend: Just check ____ to see what they are selling for...."
