Why is ebay charging final value fees on taxes and shipping
cost for final value fee? It should be based solely on the price of the item sold PERIOD.
We should not be paying fees on shipping and taxes.

Hi @proficien4
Excuse the impertinence … but ‘Why not?’
ALL payment processors customarily charge fees based on the TOTAL of the buyer’s payment. PERIOD.
eBay’s fees are a combination of Payment Processing fees and Final Value fees.
eBay’s FVF have included shipping cost for 11 years … long before your membership began. Have you just become aware of it?

Because people used to list items for a penny with $29.99 shipping, that is why.

Payment processors have been charging fees based on the total since the receipts were carved into rocks.
Paypal did it and now eBay does it.
I would once again like to suggest that the FVF be changed to "Processing Fee" as that is what it essentially is. It would save so much server space.

Have you searched prior comments on this subject?
It may be helpful to post how you would motivate eBay how lowering fees would benefit their bottom line.
I do not agree with the fees on shipping but totally understand why eBay did it. So I accept and move on.
As to the fee on the taxes, I gladly pay it. NO WAY, could I keep up on the tax policy of every county, state in the country.

I would love it: I could list an item for a $1.99 and the shipping for what I want for the item like $520.00
And pay not much at all in eBay fees...
Yep such a great idea you got for me: not so good fer eBay is it?
Oh and this is the why it is charged on shipping: they use to do this to avoid fees..
The tax well Because they can:
I do not mind due to I do not want to do the books and remit sales taxes paper and money i would have to do to all them states etc....

How dare you have an opinion like this!!! Sure... it Makes Sense that they shouldn't base their fees on tax and shipping....however, you're not allowed to have any opinions like this against Ebay. These "Pro" Ebay sellers will eat your lunch and give you quite the what's-what if you have any unsavory opinions about Ebay. Careful what you post here, these people don't play!

Everyone is entitled to their opinion on what eBay "should" do. Even the folks that disagree with your opinion.
Do you think that others have not expressed similar views before? And have not received similar responses in return?
This is not the first time this conversation has been had.
eBay decides how fees are calculated. Sellers decide for themselves whether the amount of those fees are acceptable or not in any given case and act accordingly.

And lest we forget that some 20 years ago the then CEO of Ebay, Meg Whitman, encouraged such auction listings and use to showcase that large seller of CDs who had auctions that always started at 1¢.

Has anyone here implied that the OP isn't entitled to his own opinion of eBay fees?
Are you unaware that there are a great many people who are unhappy about the fees?
In reality, eBay's fees are posted in more than one location. Since eBay is highly unlikely to change their fee schedule, those who don't like it can express their opinion or else just find another selling venue, their choice.

Are you kidding. I would encourage folks reading these posts to check posters profile. You can see if they are "pro" eBay sellers or not.
More often than not they are critical thinkers. I for one have gone from listing 100's of items a week to just casual listing.
I have issues with promoted listings, changes to search, treating vintage sellers the same as those who sell modern or consumer goods.
But that's not what this post is about. It about a subject that has been debated and put to rest.
Its in all buyers and sellers interest that eBay survives and functions well. For me it isn't so I sell and buy less. It's my hope there is a change in the future that makes buying and selling work better for me here.
All things that effect me here on eBay in an adverse way are not necessarily eBay's fault or responsibility to resolve. A few examples, USPS fees, tax reporting, banning of some items....
So post what you want here but I really want eBay to work, for me IT IS NOT, but by no means is eBay my enemy and by no means am I giving up hope. I've been here since 1999 and have good and bad runs with eBay.
This battle over fees has sailed....

If you buy a gallon of milk at walmart for 4 dollars. They charge tax on that 4 dollars. As a seller they don't pay taxes. Just the buyer. Go figure...

187th topic about this same thing. Maybe they should just post a generic locked topic at the top of the page so everyone knows the fees are based on the total amount of the transaction. It would eliminate topic 188 from starting.

I don't like it either but it how processing fees work. And yes, walmart does get charged, they just don't make it your problem. Why do you think gas stations have a cash price and credit price!?! I await your thoughts on that.
As sellers, and "old" "timers" like me, WE HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY to adjust and ACCEPT the new world. Until it changes as an industry standard, WHICH IT IS, we have to accept it or get steamrolled or quit. Honestly, I don't sell alot here, I sell at shows.
That doesn't mean I cannot see positives in eBay.
