Good idea but not everyone is on their computer 24/7 much less at the end of an auction(s) that they have bid on.

Fixed price with IPR is the way to go if you want immediate payment.

I'm going poor fast.....waiting five days for payment. I was told my eBay, that if a shopper pays with Amex, then it takes even longer. I asked if, they would alert me about a Amex payment. I was told, that feature is not set up. The PayPal system in seconds was what kep eBay competitive. Not now.

I see this as a bad idea - auctions are often used as a bait so buyers / bidders can make up a larger order with combined auction and BIN items - its bad enough for ebay to send 'well open cases if you dont pay now' messages a few hours after auctions end.

If buyers were compelled to pay immediately for BIN - what happens to postage savings the seller would offer, apart from ebay grabbing their fees on it, then the seller having to refund the buyer and losing out.
From scant information i can gleam on Managed Payments, i dont think that refunds would be even possible without demerits to the seller.

@graphsandbooks-2000

Hard to do on auctions with all the  different time zone auction ending times.  We are in the  Eastern  Time zone and have won auction bids while counting sheep.

But I no longer  do auctions just  fixed listings w/immediate payment required (IPR) and it  has worked out  just fine for me.   We  had most of our  none payers on our  auctions.  You can have a IPR on an auction listings IF you have an Buy It Now Option on your auctions listing.  The IPR only applies to the BIN option portion - hey it is better than a stick in the eye.

and how does that work on when buyer buys multiple items and you combine for shipping ?

Well without buyer paying separate postage charges and seller refunding them, which ebay love as the steal fees on everything paid.

The Shopping Cart isnt that reliable, in that the sellers must have the correct options checked off for it to function, and ebay changes the detail frquently. usually you get messages ' buyer doesnt combine - when in their narrative they do, so that situation ends up with simply deleting those items from Cart.

You can file an Unpaid Item Dispute after 2 days of nonpayment.  The buyer will than have 96 hours to pay.  If no payment received, close the case.  The buyer gets a strike and you get the FVF refunded.

One reason I do not use IPR is that my buyers often purchase multiple items, and I do give a discount for multiple purchases.  I ship by weight/distance so my rule is to add up all the weights.  ebay has a problem combining an item shipped FCP with one shipped PM, so I have only lost $ on one transaction.

Don't really know  haven't had someone buy  multiple items in a while.  But if they  have indicated they wanted to combine shipments  and you agree to offer a discount  on the combined shipping  charge, advise  the  buyer to  buy the items BUT DO NOT PAY until you send them a revised combined invoice reflecting a revised  S & H charge and they  need to pay promptly because another shopper can can buy & pay for the item if they hesitate.  See even if  the listinf w/an IPR condition the buyer  doesn't have to pay immediately but the listing  remain open to the first payer.  Of course, if the buyer  doesn't indicate the wish a S & H discount  w/multiple item purchase or you listing doesn't  say you will offer a reduced S & H charge for multiple item purchases you really don't have to extend a S & H.  i have bought stuff on lien (multiple items and I was charge the full S & H indicated for each item - Sears, MTD,, HD, etc)

Well without buyer paying separate postage charges and seller refunding them, which ebay love as the steal fees on everything paid.  Can't  say eBay stole any fees from me in 1524   transactions - eBay CLEARLY indicates they DO NOT REFUND FVF on partial refunds - written policy is  not  stealing

The Shopping Cart isnt that reliable, in that the sellers must have the correct options checked off for it to function  (seems fair to me - I can't pay a bill on line unless all fields are properly filled in), and ebay changes the detail frquently. usually you get messages ' buyer doesnt combine  (do you mean seller???) - when in their narrative they do, so that situation ends up with simply deleting those items from Cart.

Managed payment....means no money for 5 days. So much competition for online shopping and they decide to make selling harder and drawn out.

One problem with your theory-for most sellers getting paid isn't so much the issue.  The problem is whining sniveling buyers who complain endlessly and want some of their money back because it's not right, but it's nothing $ 25 can't fix.

And then, if you are lucky, eBay won't come in, decide the item was not correct and take back all  the money including the money you gave back to the buyer.

Buyers who fail to pay within the specified period pose problems for me, as well.  I run a small business. Every time I need to travel, I have to evaluate the risk of buyers paying for their auction purchase late, and I have to consider my ability to haul unpaid items with me, and to ship items if they are eventually paid for.  Late paying buyers interfere with my business plan that involves a mixed use of auction and fixed price listings. There are many times when I deliberately want to list using an auction format, for example when I am selling a unique, or desired item, of uncertain value. Late paying buyers cramp my listing strategy.

I would prefer to see the elimination of unpaid disputes. Why can't sellers simply specify the desired terms for payment (2 days, 4 days, 7 days, whatever?)  If the item is not paid for within the specified period, an unpaid strike would be issued to the buyer, and the seller would have the ability to move on promptly with listing and shipping strategies that fit their calendar plans.

I'm a small seller that has managed to find "legal" workarounds to nearly every legitimate complaint people seem to post and every annoying eBay policy seemingly created to drive away the small sellers.  While not referring to your particular ask, most of the issues people bring up is because they are misinformed or choose to be ignorant.  In any case -

Re:  " I have to consider my ability to haul unpaid items with me, and to ship items if they are eventually paid for."

  1. Not necessary to take any items with you, all you need to do is print the shipping label and it counts as shipped.  OK, don't wait too long to drop it off but you get the idea.  I sold an item today, Sunday 11/10 and with the Post Office closed for a holiday tomorrow, it won't actually get to the post office until Tuesday AM, 11/12.   But the sold listing now shows today, Saturday 11/10 as the shipped date.  See how this ties into #2 below as well, you can get upwards of four days to ship without penalty if you manage dates to your advantage.
  2. For auctions, time them to end somewhere between Saturday 5p Pacific time and anytime on Sunday, even into the wee hours of Monday morning.   Even if there's a beef that you printed the shipping label but didn't deliver to the post office in a timely manner having an item sell when you technically can't ship it anyway buys you a little more time.  This timing strategy used to work with Fixed Price listings as well but with the new and ever-popular mandatory Good 'Til Canceled policy...anyway, I'll leave that for another rant.
  3. If you don't care about being a Top Rated Seller, fix your shipping time in your listings to 2 business days.
  4. When not getting payment in a timely manner, when the eBay limit is reached eBay will invite you to open an Unpaid Items case.  Once that becomes a possibility I message the buyer and tell them eBay is prompting me to open the case and tell them neither one of us wants or needs that, that works almost every time.  And if it doesn't, open the case and eBay will prompt them along to pay up

I do agree on one thing, I can see no reason why sellers can't demand immediate payment for auction items however you can put a limit on when the payment is due in the listing so as to retain the right to cancel the listing and relist.

Timing Is Everthing !!
