Did you mean:

eBay you are confusing people on Taxes and 1099 Information on your help page.

Below is the old 1099 Information and explanation.

Pretty straight forward.  Indicates that the Gross Amount includes things like shipping and fees etc. and that they are not subtracted from the Gross Amount.

This is the new 1099 Information and explanation directly from the eBay 1099 information Page.

This statement

"This amount does not include any adjustments, for example, credits, discounts, fees, refunds, or any other adjustable amounts. "

Is not clear when, or who is taking the adjustment. I could read this as

A - The total does not include the adjustment amounts used in the examples (meaning eBay took all that stuff out) or,

B - I could read it as the gross amount is not adjusted for the examples given.

I know how it works but you are going to have a huge amount of new folks dealing with this due to the new IRS rules and the way it is currently written it is confusing.

PLEASE have this re written to clearly indicate the intent.  Please also speak to cancellations as this is causing confusion as well.

Thank You

I agree, the phrasing in the second sentence in your second image,  "this amount does not include..." is confusing because it could be taken either way although option "B" is correct.

It would be more accurate to say something like, "this amount is the full amount that eBay has processed for you, and has not subtracted any  fees or expenses such as returns or postage".

That whole paragraph should be thrown out and rewritten.

The point is that the text in the second image is ambiguous if you don't already know what it's trying to say.

One thing I noticed is the advise to contact your tax advisor.  How many eBay sellers have an accountant or tax consultant?    Maybe the high volume sellers do but, small sellers take care of taxes by themselves.   The IRS is adding over 80,000 new employees someone has to pay the salaries.  Best of luck in the New Year!

That's not the only sloppy communication - there is also the problem of sales versus payments reported for revenue - two different versions are given.

eBay badly needs a well trained tech writer, an editor and a rewrite of a lot of their communication.

@nobody*s_perfect  Thank you for figuring out a way to say that I could not.

I have shared the 1099  page link with a few new folks and half read it as A and half as B.

There are so many new folks that will be looking at this it needs to be crystal clear.  The original version was much easier to understand.
