eBay turns a blind eye to scammers trying to steal over $1000 from me.

I just had another fishy situation that I will luckily be able to avoid.  Two different accounts that were created at the same time purchased the same type of item.  They provided the same shipping details but the purchase details were different.  Went through hell trying to get someone in trust and safety.  Even then the complacency and lack of caring showed by support is sad.  I guess why would it matter to eBay if sellers lose money as long as eBay gets their fees?  I'm just a worthless piece of 💩 expendable human as far as eBay is concerned.

It sure is a shame I have to choose between losing money I need to pay the bills, or risk getting scammed if my experience based hunch is correct.

What is the scam and how are they trying to steal money from you?

Using stolen payment information most likely.

@gwzcomps

That's ^^^ no choice. You know your hunch (based on your experience) is correct. I'm just sayin'...

Or maybe it's a guest buyer using two credit/debit cards because of funds/spending limits.

Earlier this month I used 4 different eBay accounts to buy four record albums from the same seller on the same day - all shipped to the same address. In retrospect I guess I'm lucky he didn't cancel my orders because of stolen payment information 🙂

Customer Service may seem complacent because there is nothing they can do to fix this. The perpetrator is probably someone sitting in some country in Africa at an internet cafe using a account they just set up. They will abandon this account after they scam a few people, and then start again tomorrow with a new account. How can eBay catch them?

Did you use a freight forwarder for your address?  Did the purchase information not match the shipping information?  Also not sure why you would need to participate in such a behavior.  There is nothing stopping a buyer from using different payment methods on the same account.

Well, I'm no tech wizard, but hiring people to scan messages that have certain keywords would help.

But then, that would mean hiring people to scan messages...

Pardon me but if they paid and the item showed ready to ship from the shipments page then it would be your obligation to ship... As well, I had this situation where a customer used two accounts to buy multiples of one item some years ago, one of those was a guest account but both orders went to the same address... For this reason I called the customer... When I spoke with them they said it was for a college project and they had to use two accounts because ebay limited their purchases to 10 per account per day...

I did not wish to educate the customer on the fact that I placed the limit in my settings, instead decided to ship the items since they did pay... Not a problem from that purchase.

Technically that setting exists for a reason, but again having spoke to the customer it quickly became obvious they were simply not too versed in ebay's ways (and likely didn't care to be).

So I do know this...

Somewhere in the seller settings or preferences there is an option to REQUIRE a phone number.

I would most definitely check to make sure this is set to ON.

Saves you from a lot of unconfirmed guest account purchases.

Buyers can still use a guest account, but they must provide a phone number with their order.

And I believe it confirms it but as well, just one extra step tends to weed out a lot of trouble.

You have to decide where you want to cut your risk, but cancelling purchases based on a hunch just because there are threads here about people being scammed... That doesn't help inspire consumer confidence, just thought I'd mention it.

Scan messages between millions of buyers and seller real time? I guess they would have to hire millions of new employees to do that.

Require a higher level of vetting of accounts.  eBay is pretty fast to shut down new selling accounts.  Even if you try to vet the selling account through CS before you start listing.

To what messages are you referring? No one has posted anything regarding messages.

Its not that hard.  eBay has recently proven they are quite capable of writing keyword filtering algorithms.  Just look at how they handled the toilet paper and cleaning supplies price gouging.  They only care about putting in the effort when it make them look better.

Also not sure why you would need to participate in such a behavior.

You are not sure why because you are not omniscient.

There is nothing stopping a buyer from using different payment methods on the same account.

Actually, there was something stopping me from using those 4 different coupons as payment methods on the same account. They were non-transferable.

So once I explain that I had four coupons from eBay issued to four different accounts that were all expiring on that same day, it would make perfect sense why I needed to "participate in such a behavior" ... because it saved me $60 on $80 in purchases.
