The system is very buggy and not smartly designed. In the Manage All Orders page, one can inadvertently select "Actions" (which automatically select all orders) + "Get shipping label", and buy hundreds of shipping labels on old already shipped or cancelled orders (where your true intent is to only buy shipping labels for unshipped uncancelled orders). There is no mechanism to prevent it from happening and the system is very error-prone and the consequence is serious.
Today I found I shipped out a buyer-requested-cancelled order and was surprised how it could have happened. Why did the system fail to recognize an order that has been cancelled and fail to prevent shipping label from being purchased at first place? This is a basic check that should be there at the very beginning. Operation like shipping label purchase should not be allowed on a cancelled order.
I once purchased a lot of shipping labels on old delivered orders and were not aware that I had been charged in the back for those shipping labels until a month later.
This is a huge defect in the system that needs to be fixed immediately.

eBay can only do so much to protect us from ourselves.

That's why I do one order at a time, so I don't make any mistakes.

Please explain exactly (like step by step) how you purchased a shipping label that has already shipped.
Me thinks u did a big "my bad" and are blaming eBay
PS just reading what you wrote from the headline down

That eBay puts unshipped orders, shipped orders, and cancelled orders in one basket and leaves it all to sellers to differentiate them makes batch operations like buy shipping inoperable and dangerous.
A cancelled order needs to be greyed out or crossed out, making them look obviously different and all further operations be blocked.

Do you use Seller Hub?

Sorry to say @luprostore but this was not an eBay defect, but rather user error. eBay clearly separates orders.
When you go to your Orders page in Seller Hub, the system automatically defaults you to the page: Manage orders awaiting shipment
If one uses the filter that you did for: Manage all orders
https://www.ebay.com/sh/ord/?filter=status:ALL_ORDERS
Then you're looking at all orders - shipped, unshipped, cancelled, awaiting payment, etc. Everything that's not Archived.
eBay does put in safeguards by defaulting to awaiting shipment, but with the way you chose to apply filters and show all orders, you caused your own error.

I know that. I don't often make mistakes. I rarely do but when I do, I want eBay to prevent it. Like buying shipping for a cancelled order is clearly something eBay can prevent by just adding several lines to the code.
Sellers need not waste time on such trivial things.

Why shouldn't it? It's entirely possible that a seller could go pull a sold item to pack, discover that it's somehow damaged, and decide to cancel the order and refund the buyer but send them the item anyway as a token of goodwill. They should be allowed to do that if they so choose.

"If wishes were horses beggars wold ride"............ and ...... I didn't want to go to New York City ever - - - but I did
Sold for 41+ years - running into "trivial" matters was not uncommon in my opinion - deal with it and move on - eBay is like a landlord they make and change the rules as they see fit. If you want a change you have barked up the wrong tree. Go to the Help and Contact link at the bottom left of this and most every page and state your case.
This is just a discussion board for eBay buyer and sellers run by Khoros for eBay.

Multiple roads lead to Roma, but make sure every road is safe. The road I use most often is "awaiting shipment", but it sometimes takes time for the cancelled order to be removed from that base. Another road is "Actions + getting shipping labels". If this road is not safe, it should be closed.

What about a cancelled order? What about a 3 month old delivered order? Why is still buying shipping label available?

Maybe the seller would want to ship something else to them... for whatever reason.
