I only sell one type of item, that being handmade Christmas ornaments.  I have always listed all the ornaments in the Collectibles category.  I wonder if it may be better to split my listings between the Collectibles category and the Home and Garden category to get more visibility.  My ornaments are inexpensive, so listing all of my ornaments in both categories would be cost prohibitive.  Any thoughts and/or experiences that can be shared will be appreciated.

Handmade and inexpensive, sure why not place some in home & garden on a trial basis.

I think you are overthinking it.

If I was looking for a Christmas ornament I would enter the search terms ”Christmas decoration” and then any adders if I was after something special.

It is IRRELEVANT to me and, I suspect the search engine as well, as to what category it is in.

If your title matches my inquiry I will find you.

Spending extra money for a second category, which presumably will have the exact same title, seems like a waste.

The only way your plan makes any sense would be if there are people who search specifically by category rather than by title/nomenclature. Anybody do it that way? And why?

Make a good case for it and I follow suit.

For me and I suspect for many others, refining by category is the first thing you do after entering a search in All Categories.

I do my own cross promotions between categories by providing links in descriptions to similar items.  Like this:  Say I am selling xxx and yyy is a similar item.  I may list xxx in one category and yyy in another.   In the description for xxx I include "You might also like [link to ebay item yyy] this item."  And vice versa.  So potential buyers may see my items in both categories.
