My 20-something daughter never uses ebay. Lately she is has be reporting that stuff she wants is out of stock "everywhere online". I tell her to check ebay: there it is. Today she wanted "shop towels" to make masks and was going to scour the town. I checked ebay: 2500 search results and at least some that seem to be good priced. That may change I guess if people find out they can be used to make masks. Sewing goods are selling out, but again, she never checks ebay. She did say "ebay is saving everyone's butt".

I saw a Facebook post yesterday showing how to use a bandana, a paper towel and ponytail holders to make a mask. I have the bandanas and paper towels, just needed the ponytail holders. I checked here on eBay first because I don't want to go to Walmart for just ponytail holders. The ones I ended up buying showed more than 10 available, however, 7 had sold in the hour. I bet the items to make our own masks will be running out soon, too.

I have always shopped here for many items from hard to find items to things as simple as large bottles of Shampoo or chain saw blades and gas caps for the DH
Now with NJ #2 in the country with virus cases and my health issues we won't go out & risk it so I was thrilled to be able to order my Whole house water filters and O rings from a seller on ebay and they will be here in a few days .
I hope more buyers look to ebay because it is a great place to find items as long as you can wait a few days.

Ebay - like Amazon, WalMart, neighbors & friends, mom & pop stores, thrift stores, hardware stores, grocery stores, farm stands, convenience stores, etc. - is just one tool among many that are available.
Sure, but my only point is now my young adult daughter who never shopped on ebay is discovering it can be a good resource.

Seems like people are missing the whole point of your post. eBay is NOT a has-been!

As the father of 2 teenagers who don't shop on eBay, I get your point. Somehow eBay needs to get the word out that it is a valid place to shop for the younger people. It's eBay's future! Why don't they see that?

Great post! I am the first one to say, "Why don't you try eBay? You can find everything there!"

Probably because a lot of the items that are sold on eBay do not appeal to younger buyers. It's a cyclical problem: sellers complain that younger buyers aren't interested in shopping on eBay, but then they continue to list things that have little to no appeal to younger buyers.
I sell many things aimed at younger people and get plenty of sales. If people want younger buyers to shop here, they need to do their part by offering things that said younger buyers want to buy.

eBay steers the ship. As good as I like to think my marketing prowess is I don't have the financial means to change the mindset of a whole generation of buyers. eBay should have been doing that all along. They would be the Macro. Us individuals are the Micro.

My teenage daughter said something at school about me selling on eBay and they turned up their noses and said Amazon was better. She set them straight! That cool backpack she has been carrying to school...eBay! That cool Harry Potter water bottle...eBay! She is eBay's biggest (young) fan.

Tell your daughter that eBay isn't saving anyone but the small businesses who sell on eBay are saving everyone's butt. At a time when small businesses are being destroyed by the complete lock down of the economy, she will also be helping them, which in the long run, is much better for this country than WalMart or Amazon will ever be. Why eBay isn't ponying up to run commercials reminding everyone that eBay is indeed open for business and made up of mostly small business completely baffles me. They are passing on a huge opportunity to steal back market share, gain new customers, and help sellers. Strategically, this is eBay's chance to regain a lot of ground and they are totally blowing it.
