Wondering if anyone can identify the material in this antique bracelet.

I'm pretty good with jewelry but this has me stumped.

It's an antique bracelet with some kind of material attached. It can dent with your fingernail, not easily though, and appears like some type of animal skin or other material.

The main color is black, but it has some bits of brown you can see here and there.

At first I thought maybe leather, but it seems rather stiff, and there is silver running through the inside of the material in order for it to not break or crack.

It's too old to be plastic, unless some kind of very early plastic.

It almost resembles Black pitch or a type of resin..I had an item that was similar and you could make a dent in it with your fingernail too, it had that smooth different feel to it right?
