I sold an item for over $100 on Thursday, 5/3, after sole bidder's bid from April 28 ended up winning. After two days of hearing nothing and no payment, the UID case got started per my auto-start rules. This morning I get this from the "buyer":
"Hello, I have received an email about this item. I did not purchase this item. I’m not sure why I’m getting the emails but I didn’t order it."
I sent one message back saying that this account definitely bid on and won my item, and noted that it takes quite a bit of concsious action to place a bid. I suggested checking with family members that might have access to the account. If it comes down to it, though, do I just need to let it time out in order to get my FVF refunded so I can relist? Is it still true that a transaction cannot be cancelled once a UID has started? Account owners are supposed to be responsible for activity of their own accounts, so if I need to wait and she needs to take an unpaid item strike, that's okay, but if I can cancel and get my item back for sale sooner, I'd probably do so since that's better for me. Thanks for advice.

You can’t cancel once a uid is open.
The buyer can leave feedback if it’s cancelled but it can be removed if the seller can show the buyer asked to cancel. Moot point since it can’t be done here now though.

You could also offer to alert Ebay that her account has been hacked since someone else used it to bid. They will take care of that problem for her. It's a serious security concern and you will be happy to help.
You can tell her just don't pay and it will close on its' own, so you can get your fees back on the transaction. and that will cancel the transaction.
Possibly you can ask her if she wants to cancel and process as buyer's request. Hopefully someone will be along soon to confirm or deny that.
I just got up.

You can only open one case per transaction, so if you want to get the FVF refunded, you will need to close the UPI case (NOT let it time out) when she doesn't pay within 4 days (96 hours) after you opened it.
I would not get into a debate with the buyer. You have responded, you don't need to do it again.

This is a good thing.
You can cancel, "buyers request", be done with it immediately, and be protected from bad feedback.

Why wouldn't I want to let the case time out? I believe I get my FVF back then. I was asking if it was possible to cancel the transaction once a case is started, so I could get the FVF refunded sooner and get the item back up for sale sooner.
I'm not planning to engage in any more messages. It's the buyer's responsibility to sort out what happened with the account, and pay or not pay, and take the unpaid item strike if the latter is the choice.

The Unpaid Item Case has been opened automatically (" the UID case got started per my auto-start rules"), so it will be closed automatically by eBay after the 4 days.
But I agree: Don't engage the buyer any more. It's not possible to do a cancellation after the unpaid item case has been opened. Just wait for the case to close.

Thanks @nobody*s_perfect, I forgot about that.
Am I right that the seller can't close the UPI and then open another case for a buyer-requested cancellation?

That would have been the best strategy if the buyer had requested it before the unpaid item case opened.
Are you sure that the buyer can't leave feedback if the transaction is canceled? I know that it will be blocked then the unpaid item case closed.

Tihs was my understanding, that a sale cannot be cancelled once the UID case is opened. Therefore the options are wait out the case and either the buyer pays and I ship, or the buyer doesn't pay, and I get my FVF back and am free to relist. This is what my plan is at this point.
I'm seeing comments to the contrary, that I can cancel...

I thought that the buyer could leave feedback after a cancellation ... I know I could have done for the last item a seller cancelled on me ... the seller said it was buyer requested and I called eBay and asked them to make a note that I had not requested the cancellation.
But, I am not remembering things too well so far today.

Once a UID is opened, you may not be able to cancel the transaction

I'm pretty sure you cannot change a UID to a cancellation. You should just let it run its course. You can offer to report her account as hacked, but you can be pretty sure it wasn't. Either she made up an excuse to back out or someone in her family with access to the account did it. Offering to report would be just a little harrassment (maybe deserved). I wouldn't bother with that waste of time & effort myself.

I would agree it's likely not hacked. I suspect a kid or spouse bid on it, and the account owner realized later and thought, "oh, no...we're not buying that," and claims to have no knowledge. I have no desire to waste additional time of mine on this just to make it harder on the "buyer." I just want to either get it paid and shipped, or get my expenses back and get the item freed up for me to relist. It appears it's best to just let the UID run its course.
