Why do so many sellers not indicate HOW they ship an item?

They just say "economy shipping" or "standard shipping".

As a buyer I want to know HOW it's being shipped.

FedEx? UPS? Parcel select? First class? Priority?

As a buyer i've actually skipped listings that don't show me this information.

Am I the only one?

Some times Priority can be, say, $40 and parcel select only $25. It still gets there either way.


For the same reasons that @simply-the-best-for-you  said.

 

UPS and FedEx are about the same price with much faster delivery times. Getting it there is not the issue. Getting it there QUICKLY is the issue.


Yeah & I was actually just talking USPS.  I found that typically the difference was literally pennies, just comparing USPS services.  Maybe it's better now, I haven't looked in quite awhile, but it was like USPS didn't want it to be used b/c there was absolutely no incentive to do so.

I don't believe eBay breaks it down that way. Economy would be services such as UPS Ground, Fedex Home, USPS First Class. Expedited would mean USPS Priority, Fedex Next Day or 2 Day, etc. You can also ask the Seller to specify what service they use, especially if the shipping costs seem too high.

I don't check in often so - Glad to see you Back inhawaii!

95% of the time I select the shipping carrier (USPS) and type, and unless it's Priority my listings ALWAYS say Standard Shipping. Must be an ebay thing.

I stand corrected then.   I thought it was a carrier decision based on the buyer's address & difficulty/out-of-the-way-ness of said address.  That's how it originally started, but I didn't realize it wasn't a carrier decision.  

 

So, is it cheaper for the seller?  Why would a seller choose it?

I have free shipping and list as standard shipping. I ship either Priority or First Class depending on weight. For buyers like you who have a carrier preference I do put it in my description that I ship USPS Priority or First Class only.

 

I usually ship the next day, but since I am on the west coast standard shipping gives me a little longer on the estimated delivery dates.

Yeah, it can be significantly less expensive. It depends on the seller, their volume, which services they have access to and a zillion other factors as I'm sure you know.

 

Those services can ship to PO boxes because final leg of delivery is with USPS, where straight UPS/FedEx can't be delivered to PO boxes (unless the buyer pays for a special service from USPS).

 

One of the bigger down sides, aside from slowness and extra handling/greater damage risk, is that any claim will result in one carrier (UPS/FedEx) blaming the other (USPS) and vice versa so claims are never paid out.

Ouch, say it isn't true? I have to say we rarely pick a carrier while listing. Just to many shipping variables.  

Example:  Say we check USPS Priority on a tire. 

(USPS) would be cheaper to NY from VA  

(UPS) would be cheaper to HI from VA

It amazes me how many buyers make purchases from sellers that have hundreds of  negative feedback comments that state "Amazon dropshipper" and still make a purchase and then have no clue why the product was not delivered, cancelled or damaged. 

If a seller listed shipping as "economy" or "standard" that would not make me skip a listings but alot of negative feedback with "Amazon Dropshipper" in the comments would.

 

I like to make purchases on Ebay but it difficult with all the **bleep** and dropshippers on Ebay. Why not just have sign on their listing "Buy at Amazon for less"

 

Dropshipping makes no sense to me and it just alienates and drives good Ebayer buyers away. I believe that is why Ebay sales are dropping.  Short term- huge profits, long term- end of days.

Because there are too many variables and sellers cannot see into the future knowing which item/items the buyer is going to purchase, what their delivery location is along with the delivery variables to that location.

It frustrates me too. If the shipping details do not show a single carrier method of delivery I message seller and ask.  If seller publishes or replies with ANY of the USPS partnerships such as Smart Post  or any USPS/FedEX , USPS/UPS, or USPS/DHL combination I will not buy there. To save a few cents on shipping, sellers are subjecting me to delivery delays of at least two days, sometimes as much as 4 days or longer due to the increased handling by the "partner" carriers at each end of the journey.  Any single major carrier in ths USA delivers product faster than any of the partnerships! I as a general rule, expect delivery within 7 calendar days or will not be a repeat buyer from any seller.

 

BTW hope you are steadily getting better!

Yeah the sellers KNOW it, the services all have names like "smart post", DHLglobal, etc. When they  buy it sellers will always know the buyer will be disappointed at the cheapskate choice made for us to save themselves a nickel on shipping costs.

Thank you for clarifying @wastingtime101  , sorry for the incorrect info.  I guess I was not quite understanding how USPS explained it to me, long ago.  Thanks for setting me straight.  I know most buyers do not like this service.

If it's not first class weight or doesn't fit a flat rate USPS box/envelope, I put economy.  I also a note in post " I ship with the cheapest but also fastest service possible (likely UPS Ground, possibly fed ex ground home maybe USPS priority depending area)"

My handle time is only a day though.

Usps ground or parcel select are usually much higher than ups or fed ex ground, USPS priority is usually at least $40 higher on anything halfway decent in size (not even competitive).  Now if your in my state by chance and priority actually is cheaper or maybe only. Dollar more, I'll use that.  I used to select one or the other but all to frequently buyer would select a service that cost me far more than another service.  I also like that the buyers are pleasantly surprised to recieve it in  3-6 days when economy says 10, I have several fast shipping feedbacks only economy listings.  Shipping is just to expensive to do it otherwise.
