Why can buyers make feedback private when they only receive positives?

My opinion is that this allows buyers to hide the fact that they NEVER bother to leave feedback for the sellers from whom they purchase items. What other reason could there be? When feedback is private, which is disallowed for sellers, ALL feedback is inaccessible - including feedback left for others. It simply isn't right. It is yet another point on a long list of how eBay doesn't adequately protect the sellers. Give me the good old days from, I believe, two administrations ago, when eBay understood just WHO it is that built their empire.

Um, it keeps purchases private.

Because maybe you bought that 12" LARGE BRILLIANT CUT CRYSTAL CELERY RELISH PLATE TRAY for your wife's birthday, and you don't want her to know about it? Or maybe the Vintage Vernon Kilns blue Florida map Souvenir Collector’s Plate was for someone who was not your wife, and you don't want your wife to know about it? Or maybe you're purchasing items you don't want anyone to know about.

Besides the fact that feedback is voluntary - for both buyer and seller - buyers can only get positive feedback and ebay doesn't do anything about buyers leaving negative feedback for sellers (it is the buyer's opinion), unless it REALLY violates policy and the sellers 'points' it out.  The BOD has always understood who built their empire - they, and the investors, did.

Not saying 'NO' doesn't mean 'YES'.

Feedback is voluntary. NOBODY has to leave it.

In Ebay's eyes, if you are a seller, no feedback received = good feedback.

Buyers who make their feedback private do it for two reasons:

  1. They are legitimate buyers who don't want others to see what they buy, for whatever reason.
  2. They are scammers who use feedback extortion against sellers, and they don't want other people to see their extortion trail.

The good old days?  You mean the days when bad sellers ran off good buyers by sending junk, no money back guarantee and buyers with legitimate complaints got left negs calling them scammers? No thanks.

The easier you are to offend the easier you are to control.

With over 5000 feedback score, apparently you have forgotten what it means to be at the start of building your positive reputation on eBay. That's too bad. I find that to be a sign of ingratitude, as is not bothering to leave feedback for sellers who deserve it.

Um... it's been years since you could see what a person purchased based on looking at the feedback they receive OR leave...

nunya business what I have purchased, and in some cases, with  a bit of digging around, it is sometimes possible to figure out what someone has purchased by the feedback left.

Private feedback is not an indication of who does, and who does not leave feedback.

I have 95 rec. 94 left. I will assure you that the seller does not want #95

It has nothing to do with gratitude. No seller "deserves" feedback...not even when I started at zero.

Worry about providing a good product at good prices and delivering great service and the feedback will take care of itself. Those are the things within your control. To spend a second on agonizing about buyer behavior and whether or not they leave feedback is wasted time and pointless....much like this discussion, lol.

How are you even able to see someone's purchases? That is not supposed to be viewable..... Seriously, I'd like to know...

"Why can buyers make feedback private when they only receive positives?"

Because they feel safer that way.

"My opinion is that this allows buyers to hide the fact that they NEVER bother to leave feedback for the sellers from whom they purchase items"

Who cares. feedback is not mandatory. They purchase, they pay, they get item, they happy,: I make money.

All good.  No feedback, well the next may or may not.. Still make money.
