Why being consistent is important in business

I am not sure ebay understands this when asking visitors to open a store. I had to deal with it myself... I've had inconsistent sales.

Our CEO explains why consistency is key when building a successful business

Being consistent is one of the most vital and surefire ways to continually grow a successful business, however it is also something that is often overlooked. It is inefficient to hit a personal sales record one day and then let your performance slip for the rest of the week, as it is maintaining a high performance quality that will help the business build and reach the goals you are striving for.
Consistency can impact on many areas of business. Maintaining a consistent level of service is essential, ensuring that clients always receive and expect high standards from us. Consistently delivering on what we say we will means that clients know what they can get from us, so we tick their boxes and keep them happy – important for building relationships. Companies should also be consistent with employees, having standardised processes in place so that staff know what they should be doing and what management expect them to achieve. For a booming business, being inconsistent equals being ineffective, so keeping up the consistency and reliability is the true hallmark of a successful business.
Advantages of being consistent
1) Measure changes – Being consistent when implementing new schemes or processes will ensure you have reliable results to analyse when trying to measure the success of a new idea or working method. If the plan was not stuck to consistently, then it is incredibly difficult to see whether the procedure would work efficiently within the business structure. Replicating successes is the main way to grow a business, so it is essential to be able to measure developments.

2) Creates accountability – Consistently setting aside a regular time to discuss the progress of a project not only keeps you up to date but it will also motivate staff to get tasks related to the overall project done and dusted. Meeting to talk about developments face to face almost sets a mini deadline, so doing this consistently will ensure continually forward movement.
3) Builds reputation – Whether with our client base of NHS hospitals and private clinics, or with our pipeline of working locum staff, we always aim to be consistent so that we can create and forge a track record of success. If we always provide qualified locum doctors, or we always suggest numerous suitable work placements, then the medical staff who work with us will rely on us and have brand loyalty. This cannot be achieved without consistency.
4) Makes you relevant – A predictable flow of information helps keep you in the mind of both clients and doctors. A lacklustre, half-finished campaign won’t reap any results, but if you consistently maintain regular campaigns over set time periods, then you can better monitor how to use them to your advantage and how you can improve to help boost business.
5) Maintain the message – As a leader, personally being consistent is also important, as staff will look to you as an example. Being consistent in leadership and showcasing model behaviour will encourage staff to do the same and follow your lead.

Ebay is very consistent. They consistently try to find ways to put your money in their pockets.

You also can not build a solid business relying on another business because if they fail so do you.

Any business will do that, just what do you get back in return.

EBay is not your friend.

EBay is not even your business partner.

EBay is your landlord.

They are in the business of renting access to the world wide web to sellers.

They also have set up payment processing, mostly through Paypal, but other ways too.

And they have set up a Dispute Resolution Centre to keep both buyers and sellers communicating, if not always happily.

There is no one size fits all in the business world.    If you provide services or sell only one line of products it is far easier to be "consistent"  than if you sell a wide range of products with some subject to availability and seasonality.

Before selling on ebay I had a brick and mortar store - no matter how "consistent" my business hours or policies were  - the number of customers entering the store on a daily basis and my daily sales were far from "consistent".

From what I've seen they don't want buyers & sellers communicating at all - except for the "work it out" phrase used in disputes.

What ebay really wants in a dispute is for the seller to pay up and the buyer to go away.
Reality is the leading cause of stress.

My previous landlords never came in and changed my furniture around or sat down at my kitchen table and made themselves a snack LOL.

I can relate to this. I used to own a service station in a small town. Sometimes I would sit there for hours and not see a soul. Other times I had enough work for 5 people. And then there were the "emergency oil changes" at closing time. I always loved those LOL.

The ones who don't ever check their oil and just wait for the light to come on?
