Can someone please enlighten me on this beanie baby scam going on. I searched to see what they are selling for (before I listed mine), and I was amazed how many were selling for hundreds of dollars. Then I changed the min/max to $100-3,000, and sure enough there were many selling for this price. Further investigation led me to seller - who had a "0" beside his name. Then, on to the buyer, you also had "0" beside his name. Also a common denominator was that most of these buyers/sellers joined in Dec. 2018 - and even some in Jan. 2019. What is going on? I realize there are some ignorant buyers who have not done their research - because many of these beanies listed are not what they say they are! I'm so curious about this - someone help me understand how this could be a scam. One seller listed his location as a town/city that doesn't even exist in Mass

Are they actually selling for those amounts?
Money laundering has been suggested in the past in such cases.

With the government shut down I suspect maybe many of these new accounts are those trying to stay afloat with a lot of wishful thinking.

Hmmmm… does this same seller have the same beanie listed in the same price range? Or maybe another newbie seller?
Sounds like someone is trying to make others believe that they are worth that much by creating false "sold" items/prices.

Yep - I think a little bit of money laundering - I collected Beanies for years and then the bottom dropped out - even rare ones you were lucky to get $100 for near the end.

I see the same thing with old Disney Black Diamond VHS movies. They seem to sell for thousands of dollars but the same item will also sell for $5.

I'd be interested in learning how they get the dirty money into a PayPal account.

Were they auctions? It's probably just bored sport bidders messing around.

I am sure many government workers went "oh, wait, let me pull that beanie baby and sell it on ebay"

Here there was a prostitution/ drug dealer group doing it.
They were selling their stuff and instead of charging $100, they were charging 1 item we have listed on eBay that is $100.
I wanna say they even gave the person the item to try and say that was what they were actually buying, not the drugs or sex.

Well its interesting you mention this. I recently went to one of the local swap meets and there was a table there with a whole pile of beanie babies for sale, which I thought was a dead inventory item many years ago... are these back in demand now?
