It does look like a bracket of some sort - used in a fireplace?

Probably a carriage or wagon step.

Absolutely. The last photo shows the reinforcing rib on the underside that lets it support body weight without snapping off the mounting arm.

Google "iron carriage step" or "iron buggy step".

It IS a carriage step... It bolted to the chassis of the carriage. I am a board officer of a farm museum and see a ton of variations of this very step on different carriages and coaches.

Hello, Thank you for the reply. Any idea if it has any value? Thanks in advance.  Homestead-Villages

I charge $40 for appraisals, payable by check or credit card... Kidding.

They do have value, the one pictured looks to be in great condition, and would probably be sought mostly after by carriage restorers who would love to have that to replace one too rusted or missing from a restoration.

If I HAD to put a monetary value on it ( and I am reluctant to not knowing the age or provenance of the item) I would start a base amount at the $50 to $75 range. Knowing now what it is, you may be able to better research what others are selling for as well.
