What is this padlock thing where you cannot reply?

I looked at a thread of interest and saw that I could not reply to any of the posts.  There is a "Padlock" icon to the right of the thread.

Does eBay do that and why?  When did it start as I have not noticed it before.  When there is an objectionable thread or post, eBay just removes it, so why this?

@etvideo1ataol  eBay "locks" threads from time to time for various reasons.  If a thread is real old or has not seen any activity for a while they Lock it to prevent further replies or activity so as not to clutter The Community.  They also lock the Weekly Chat after about an hour so no new questions can be asked but they will continue to update their replies to earlier questions.

Best regards,
Mr. Lincoln - eBay Community Mentor

@etvideo1ataol  That has been happening for quite awhile.  The mods usually lock down a necro thread that someone has resurfaced it.

Well read the post at the top of the thread- hello?

The Mods clearly state that the thread is locked and the reason for it- typically because it's from like 10 years ago.

I missed that with my one eye.

I went back and looked.  Saw nothing at the top.

Note you will also routinely encounter threads you cannot reply to, if and when they are posted in the "Member To Member Support" section.  It has been named ironically by eBay, apparently, because it's actually the area of Community where eBay members cannot give support to other eBay members.  If you're looking for a reasonable explaination, I'm not sure there is one.  Since you and I are conversing right now on a topic that could have just as easily been posted in Member to Member Support.

If you're like most posters, it will be the Last post of the thread.

As mentioned they are locking old threads, as most of the info is wrong due to the age of the thread. The old threads are getting bumped up by newbies with new problems. They need to be directed to open a new thread.

Everyone has options. Just be sure the best option is right for you.

Yes, I did find it at the end of a thread that went all the way back to 2016.  So, if you can't do anything with it, and the reason is that it is out of date and possibly wrong, (like complaining about no sales) why bring it back to page 1?

Why not just remove it?

Wrong. The M2M forum has a selected group of experienced eBay members who are allowed to respond. While that may not make sense to you, the quality of "advice" given by many posters in the other forums is often severely lacking in accuracy. Sometimes I wonder if certain "advisors" have ever used eBay.

It means that, like the Chernobyl reactor, eBay sealed off what they perceived as an out-of-control disaster so it wouldn't get any worse.

But like the Fukushima reactor, they left enough of it visible to still cause damage.

Recently saw a documentary on Chernobyl.  Was much worse than I imagined.  If some guys had not gone under the reactor and drained the water that was there, there would have been an explosion that would have destroyed most of Central Europe.  Of course, they all died from the radiation exposure, but they knew that going in.  I don't even know there names, but I should.

Yeah, joking aside they're both terrible things. And an amazing story about the sacrifices made by the firemen and other civil servants who knowingly sacrificed their lives to clean up only a few pounds of debris.

I read this morning that robots are starting to detect and locate waste leaking from Fukushima as well. Hopefully technology will help us deal with the situation better this time.

You know what? I'm wrong and I apologize.

I switched up my options so the newest reply is the first one. If someone hasn't done that then they have to go ALL the way to the last post to figure out what's going on.

You're right- it's easy to miss. No matter how many eyes you have.

I understand entirely how the section works, and what you are saying.

But I am an eBay member, able to ask questions and/or provide answers, but cannot provide support to the eBay members posting in those sections.  Therefore it is "ironically" named "Member to Member Support", when that's not what you (as an eBay member entering the "Community" to ask questions or help with topics you've solved before) can actually do there.

Call it "Moderated Support" or whatever, but "Member to Member Support" just makes it seem broken that the "Reply" button is absent.

I understand the problem you're saying "limited access" is intended to mitigate.  But the "quality of support" you mentioned is /also/ lacking in many examples of the "Member to Member Support" responses we see, but are unable to do anything about because it's not actually "Member to Member Support" in that sense.

Now they have all scrolled to the next page so those coming in now will wonder what we are talking about.
