What exactly is the purpose of selling limits?

I noticed that I am nearing a $7500 selling limit and when I hit the button to increase my limit, the message says I can link to another seller to increase my limit. WHAT?!?!?  WTH is the reason for the limit in the first place? I'm at Top Rated seller status, 0% defect rate, so WHY?

Actually, with those ratings you should be able to call and get them increased. They don't really spell it out, but in the early days you do have to call CS.

Also, it's actually for your benefit. eBay likes to see how you are developing as a seller.  It's partly that too.
