What do you do about eChecks that get rejected?

Hello All,

My first time encountering on this issue:

I sold an item on 06-May-2017 and the buyer paid by eCheck. The following day or 2 I received an email from PayPal saying that his bank had rejected the payment. Prior to that I read on the forum not to send anything out even through eBay said payment received on eCheck payments but to wait for PayPal to say it was okay to ship the item. So I still have my item.

08-May-2017 - The message said PayPal would try in 3 business days to get the funds from the buyer. Today on PayPal it says : eCheck estimated completion date is May 23, 2017. Do not ship items until you receive payment. Cancel payment

I was wondering do sellers typically wait until 23-May-2017 (almost 1 month to receive the payment)? Or do you typically message the buyer and let them know you are cancelling their bid and relist the item? I'm pretty sure 23-May-2017 doesn't mean I'm going to get the money but is it worth the wait and will eBay charge me to relist the item? The Buyer has 200+ stars and is currently selling items so I just wanted to get some feedback on what sellers have done in this situation.

Thanks,

SK08

I would immediately file non payment and close 3 days later.  This way you will get your fees back.

And block him.

I always CYA approach...message the buyer and let them know that the Echeck payment they used did not go through.  Sometimes buyers click to use funds in their checking account and meant to pay by using Paypal balance or a credit card and the bank account isn't even being utilized.  They may wonder where their item is or why it hasn't been shipped.  Atleast by alerting them that they indeed paid with an Echeck and you can't ship until payment has cleared.  This way, if they come back and leave negative feedback, you are covered through your contact using Ebay messages.

Can he expediate the payment so that I don't have to wait till 23-May2017?

If e check is rejected I would assume buyer is notified of that.

Also if you file non pay can a buyer even leave feedback?

If he was able to pay you another way like a credit card and paypal says it is OK to ship then you could send it out as soon as that happens.

I checked and it gives me the option to give feedback so I assume they can give feedback since it shows "checkout complete"

I believe if you file non payment and close it 3 days later then they can no longer leave feedback.  And if they do in the meantime you can get it removed.

You may have to cancel his payment so he can pay again via a different manner, although I have no idea what happens if you do that.

Knowing ebay, they probably don't know either.

Not sure but can't the buyer just cancel or void his payment and pay another way.

An update : I followed the recommendations in this thread.

1. Messaged buyer again - told him i was cancelling the order/purchase by 12pm EST.

2. Opened an issue in the resolution center

3. Sent PayPal money back (cancelled eCheck)

The result is the buyer later paid for the product and I now have the money and can ship out the product.

Thanks for everyones input.
