What am I missing? Fake buyers?

Question-

I am an OG Ebayer and I have been out of the loop for a while and trying to figure out what I am missing.

Currently, I am helping a local family for good Karma. I am at my wit's end because as we all know listing can be very time-consuming when you are not familiar with what you're selling.

We had sold a couple of things and of course, the higher-priced item the winning buyer had a 1 rating which honestly I have been seeing a lot.  I thought there was a setting we could block with less than xxx feedbacks? 2 nonpay bidders in 1 week makes me feel like walking away.

To make it worse if any of the other bidders saw that guy going bid nuts with a rating of 1 they would have thought I was shill bidding.  Just really annoyed since that was a wasted week on a couple of non-payers in a row like what are the chances?

I feel really bad because the family gets excited when I communicate or they check-in.

I have spent a lot of time catching up on different things and just learned they call some things sport bidding. I really am at a loss because it seems VERY easy for people to make fake accounts I just do not see how they do it OR WHY they would do it. Can anyone weigh in on whether I am missing something in the settings or is the 2021 version that criminals and scammers always rule?

You can block people with two or more unpaid items in a year.  But it doesn't help.   Ebay has become a cancel culture, not an unpaid item.   I changed my mind, can you can the sale?  I found it cheaper elsewhere.

Low feedback is not a bad thing.  it means they saw something they  wanted so they made an account.

And this is ebay, criminals and scammers always ruled.  Now they are writing the rules too.

Good Moms let you lick the Beaters.

Great Moms turn them off first.

BIN Immediate payment required will stop the non payers.  Don't listen to made up stories some post about scammers writing the rules. That's a made up story and will make you think it is true.

How are they making new accounts 🤣

My daughter wanted her own account to sell her college books and unwanted clothes but I was to scared to even try to help her lol .
If any of us were to even attempt to make a second account we would be lynched and the key would get thrown away 😩

Sorry, but this can be a recipe for disaster and open slather for INAD claims.

You can set your blanket blocks as advised above, I set mine at 2 strikes in 12 months. You also need to do a lot of research regarding the new payment system now as a new seller you may be restricted to the amount you can sell and to the length of time to receive your payouts in managed payments.

List as fixed price with IPR as advise is the best way to get rid of tyre kickers. You can also set automatic

non payment that eBay deals with for you.

If a buyer hasn’t paid within 4 days, on the 5th day you can go to your Seller Hub to cancel the transaction using the “Buyer hasn't paid” reason and this gives the buyer a strike and you can relist. In future to have eBay automatically cancel your transactions due to non-payment:

Go here:   https://www.ebay.com/Cancel/Preference/UnpaidPurchase                                                            Slide the button to the left to turn it on / off or you can change the timeframe.

That’s not true. Many people have more than one account . I sell from 2 and fiddle with 2 more…. for 20 years.

There is no way to block buyers with less than a certain amount of feedback.  Think about it, if there were a way to do that, then how would any new buyers get started.

All, or nearly all, sellers will get nonpayers on occasion.  eBay will automatically open unpaid cases if you allow them to.

You state that you are helping a local family.  I presume this means you're using your account to sell for them. You ARE aware, I have to presume, that that income will need to be reported by YOU, not them.

I am experiencing the same thing. I sell sports cards and a person(s) is creating a ton of new accounts and bidding against themselves for any high end items of a certain player. It has happened to items sold through my account, through a consignor, and a couple other private sellers in the past couple weeks. All accounts are zero feedback, created recently, with fake locations and phone numbers. They are trying to prop up the price of these items so when people look at past sales they will have inflated perceived value. In the meantime, I am not getting paid and likely have lost several real customers who are probably discouraged by the activity.

Question-

- What's an OG eBayer? 🤔 Seriously... I don't recognize this acronym and want to put it into context.

It's true that you can't disallow low feedback buyers, but I've had pretty good luck with them. The deadbeats are other animals entirely. For what it's worth, eBay has recently improved  the method for dealing with them.

As @downunder-61 mentions, if you haven't received payment after 4 days, on Day 5 you can cancel the sale, citing 'Buyer hasn't paid'. It allows you to relist and gives the user an Unpaid Item strike... those  are what puts them on eBay's radar. You can even set this to happen automatically. I'd recommend it... it helps all us sellers the most. Good luck.

"Lynched" for attempting to have more than one account?

MANY of us have multiple accounts and have thus far escaped lynching.

Some catagories do seem to be more prone to irresponsible behavior.

I have 2 accounts, I do not use mo other one anymore. Been here since 97.

You certainly can not use a second account to abuse the system or shill bid.

But like business and personal accounts, that goes here too.

There is some monkey business going on here, some scammy stuff.

Some buyers do not get that it is a binding contract, not just a place where you can bid on a bunch of stuff then take what you want in the end.

Thank you! That's much better than the ones I came up with... Old Guy/Gal, Oldie Goldie.

Ocean Grown also came to mind (that was first, actually) but just didn't seem to right for a public forum. 🤣
