Just had this happen to me. eBay sided with buyer as usual. The buyer asked for a refund, said it wasn't what he expected. Which is okay because I kind of didn't want to sell the phone anyways. Shipped it to one state, the very next day the tracking says it's coming from another. So as soon as it gets to my city, the tracking says 'insuffcient address'. The buyer opens a case, and apparently showed proof to whoever was working the case that it was delivered. It most definitely was not the shipping label he bought through eBay that he showed. So the item got sent back to him and he gets my money. The auto refund on delivery is too much.

Wow, ok!! I was just warned about those very issues.
I think most platforms try and be reasonable and I would hope listen to both sides of a story and then act accordingly but, like you, I, and I guess plenty others, feel wronged when we know we have a solid case and things go against us.
I had an issue where a buyer purchased a jacket. jacket arrives but he says he wants money back because according to his post office, I could have mailed it for way less then I asked. He goes to ebay. I fight it saying the postage was on there from the beginning but he still decided to purchase it and I refuse handing any money over. He then says the item is damaged, because he lost the first round. I say send me and ebay pictures, which he does not. All this time my money is on hold. he then rates me negative. He is then told to send the item back and now according to ebay, if we refund a buyer we can avoid unnecessary negative feedback but they also say that they will delete negative feedback should the seller win the case.
He never sends the jacket back and I have to ask for my money back but guess what, the negative rating still remains even though I won the case and according to eBay, the Buyer perceived he was wronged, so in that case, ebay sided with the Buyer.

A negative or two never slowed my sales down, they don't scare me a bit.
You want to go to eBay for Business on Facebook and ask somebody to look into that, if they didn't return with eBay's label they have no proof of return.

Here we go again...
Don't sell higher-value item like a phone, and then use shipping, until Ebay institutes real Seller Protection against the current epidemic of buyer scams. Shipping opens up a whole lot of extra options that scammers lick their chops over. Use Ebay's Local Pickup or venues like Craigslist instead, where you take shipping scams out of the equation.
Granted, it may take longer for your item to sell, but with Local Pickup being used instead of shipping, at least you have much more control over the transaction, and can even insist on cash, which even takes CC chargebacks months down the line out of the equation as well. You won't lose your item due to shipping scams, and have a much better chance of not losing your money as well due to a ridiculous, totally out-of-line refund to the buyer forced by Ebay.
Cheers, Duffy

It most definitely was not the shipping label he bought through eBay that he showed.
If you approved the Return, then eBay provided the label on your behalf, no? Are you saying that your buyer used a different return label? I'm confused...

Scammers are now manipulating the ship back addresses and committing mail fraud to obtain free merchandise.

Sellers need to be aware that these phones are subject to a lot of scams on here and the mail fraud scams.

The scammers can add a tracking number from wherever they got them. Does not have to be an Ebay label and that just has to stop.

WOW! Today's eBay is a target rich environment for SCAMMERS, dishonest buyers. So much so, Paul Simon, who wrote and sang "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover", has a NEW song coming out:
