Video rejected (new listing app)

Sellers,

FYI, my experience trying to add a video using the new listing app (which in general seems pretty well done):

My video was shot with a Canon Rebel T7.  It puts out a video image 1280 X 720 pixels.  It was a relatively basic effort: two views of a camera demonstrating that the spring motor drive worked well. It had a 48MB file size, and was 40 seconds long. Sounds too simple to reject, but it violated the 1080 max pixel dimension requirement. I got the "48 hour" message saying it was "under review."

Four minutes and 20 seconds after the auction went up a buyer bid on the camera. I got a nice message a few hours later (after invoking the listing app) saying the video was rejected.  Now, since there is a bid, the video is locked and I cannot remove the violating video and replace it with one that is 1080px wide.

Bottom line for eBay: if the video has an obvious problem (like being 1280px wide) tell the seller right away. For auctions, 48 hours later will often mean that there will be no way to fix it.

Also, I would say this is not a case of altering the description after there are bids: the original video did not appear in the description bidders saw, so this is like adding a photo (which, if I recall correctly, is allowed early in the auction even if there are bids).

Video rejected (new listing app)

That's consistent with an auction that has a bid. Photos (and video) cannot be touched once there's a bid.

The video was rejected for exceeding allowable resolution (1280 when max is 1080) and I agree, the system should have kicked it back to you instantly before you published the listing.

For future reference, here's the video help page with all the tech specs and here's the video policy page with even more info.

@argy_eyes  You may already have tried this, but I can't be sure from your post...in the second gallery box (the video box) is there a little trash can icon? If so, can you click on that and send the failed video to the Trash? That might then allow you to try a new video.

Interesting flaw. Thanks for posting it.

Tagging in tyler@ebay since he was working on getting some video questions answered here so he can add this to his comms with the videos team.

Thanks MCB and WT for your responses on this subject.

As per the Trash icon, this is what I see in the listing app now (and there is no trash icon beneath the blue bubble):

@wastingtime101

WT,

Good summary of the box I'm in!

I would maintain though that this is more like adding a picture after there are bids (because the bidders never saw the 1280px video) than changing a photo after there are bids.  I usually leave a photo open in case someone asks a question, and I think I recall adding such a photo after there were bids — but maybe my memory is playing tricks.

@argy_eyes  I believe you are correct...at least at one time, you could ADD a new photo after a bid IF you had a spare gallery slot. (You could not remove an existing photo and replace it with a new photo).  But it appears that, even if that policy is still in force for photos, since ONLY the #2 slot is available for video, and since ebay is treating a REJECTED video as if it were an EXISTING video, no replacement video is possible.

I agree.

This is a design flaw.

As you note, since no bidder has relied on the rejected video for information, because it has never been visible to any bidder, you should be able to delete it and try uploading a new video.

Hopefully, tyler@ebay  can contact the Video Team to see if this can be adjusted.

For future reference, and especially for any auction format listing, I believe another poster (sorry, don't recall who) has said that if you upload your video to your draft, and then put it in the template or draft section (ie, don't go live with it just yet) you can wait until the video is approved and THEN go live with the auction. I would assume if it is rejected instead, you would be able to remove the rejected video from the draft and try a replacement video.

This would accomplish two things:

1. You would not run into this problem and 2. Your video would go live at the same time as your listing, so no risk of the up to 7 day delay for video review that ebay has indicated can occur during busy periods.

Just something to consider for the future, I realize it doesn't resolve your current situation.

Thanks very much My Cottage for your clear analysis and a great suggestion for how to go forward. The next time I do this I'll store it as a draft until the video is approved. Just the right approach.

Video rejected (new listing app)

I'm having a similar problem, although I'm not sure why my video got rejected. eBay didn't give me a reason. And in fact, if your video was 1280 X 720 pixels, then it DID meet their requirements - that is 720p. Resolution of a 1080p video (which is what the help page indicates as the max supported) is 1920 x 1080 pixels. That's what mine was, so I met that requirement.

I wonder if because it received a bid, that locked out the video automatically since it wasn't already approved and images get locked when a bid is received? If that's the case, we should certainly get a prompt warning us of that possibility.

I see the suggestion below about waiting for approval in draft mode. Sounds like a good solution for now, assuming that videos of items in draft mode are actually reviewed.
