Vacation Settings

I turned my vacation settings on & show vacation dates. I also selected Keep people from buying your fixed price listings while you're on vacation.  In the past, users could still view my listings - I know, because I would get their messages. Now none of my store items display.  Did this just happen?

Vacation Settings

Its always been my assumption that they are dropped from search. I also select the block when I use the vacation setting. I have checked years back and they stopped showing in search. I haven't checked since though in case somethings changed.
I have read on here in the past that if a buyer has your item on their watch list they would still be able to buy and/or presumably message, though I have not had an occurrence of that myself.
I will admit though the language in the vacation settings make it look as if buyers would still be able to view your items.

Right now I am trying to buy an item that says the seller is on vacation. But, I may have put it on my Wish List prior to their vacation? From my wishlist, I was allowed to put it in my cart, but I am not allowed to check out. I find it EXTREMELY frustrating, as it do not want to miss out on this discontinued item.

They will not appear in the search returns while you have this setting in play.

But if a buyer has any of your items in their shopping cart or on their watch list, they can still see them and they could email you from those listings.  However they would not be able to purchase them.  They will however remain on their watch list or in their shopping cart as long as they want to leave them there.

Your situation is exactly why in my opinion, sellers should hide their listings when they have to put Stores On Vacation.

Returning to an annoyed customer is not going to be a pleasant experience, for either party in the transaction.

If you can't ship it within a day or two (and most buyers expect shipment within 24 hours or less) don't tease the customer.

Send the seller a message and make them aware you intend to purchase the item as soon as they are back from vacation. Ask them to please let you know when its available. One of the few remaining cool parts of ebay is the access for personal contact between buyer and seller.

Vacation Settings

There are 2 settings for the Vacation hold.

When I go on vacation, even for the weekend, I select the option to HIDE my listings, so no one can purchase them.  I have a 1-day handling time, and do not wish to bulk edit changing my handling time.

If you select the option to keep your listings viewable, buyers can still purchase, BUT you will receive a ding for late shipping if you do not change your handling time, as ebay still expects you to ship within your handling time (even if on vacation, which is why you have to extend your handling time to cover the time you are away).
