Using a reference to increase your selling limits...

This is just an FYI to share some information I have.

As has been previously posted, my partner got involved in my stamp selling business by splitting the cost of stamp albums with me, and then I do the work to list them (what I was lacking in was money to buy albums, I just do the work because I have the knowledge).

He opened an account a few weeks ago to be able to sell some electronics gadgets that he's working on (having a working model is still a long way off, but we discussed how getting some actual eBay experience is a good idea before trying to sell seriously).

To get this experience he's been buying low priced coins and banknotes (and most sellers in my genre do leave feedback), and now that he has 50 fb, he's listing a box of tokens I scanned last weekend. The tokens are 99 cents to about 7.99 a piece. I will be doing all the actual shipping when they sell (it's an auction to have a finite time on the listing, rather than have it linger for months being GTC).

OK, the interesting part...

When he created the account, they gave the default 10 items to a maximum of $1000 (I assume that's the default), and that's not going to work when we have 400+ inexpensive tokens to move.

He called eBay and explained to them that he's not new to how the system works, and we've been doing stamp sales for the past 5 months, and explained to the agent what he knows about how eBay works, and provided me as a reference to increase his selling limits.

So I guess this is a heads up to other sellers that someone who knows you has the ability to use your ID as a reference to increase limits. (The limits were increased to 100 items and 5K).

Before anyone gives me a hard time about this (I knew he was going to call, I heard his side of the conversation because I was there), I have a tenant that buys and sells adult items in the adults category who is much more likely to be a problem for me as far as responsibility on a sellers account goes. I'm completely not worried at all about my partner's account because we are doing this together, and I've already impressed upon him all the rules about "the buyer is always right" that he would need to follow to avoid issues.

I have a feeling they connected the accounts.

I did this when I opened a second selling account years ago... I was trying to get the limits raised on that one, they looked at my first account (this one) and I went from 10 - 250 in about 30 minutes. (Dollar amount was low but I was ok with that as it was going to be for dollar items and I didn't need it to be that much of a higher dollar amount).

I hate photobucket right now... PS Answers given years ago may or may not be current now, please check with current posters to the boards to see if the information is still relevant.

The agent said she was not going to link the account. He had said he wanted to keep his business activities separate from mine.

If the accounts were connected, that would be pretty scary, because no one spoke to me to even verify I knew who he was or that I approved of being used as a reference.

It did occur to me that they might connect the accounts anyway since we both use our accounts from each other's wifi (I've been on his wifi for the past three years, so there was no separation there, but he didn't have an eBay account until a few weeks ago). I'm really not worried about the accounts being linked because it's him... I'm far more worried of what my tenant is doing, but I can't really tell him he can't do things on eBay (and he's been on my wifi, so any damage has already been done).

I'm always happy to be wrong 😉  And in this case I hope I am.

And come to think of it (it was YEARS ago) they did ask me a bunch of questions about the main account before the upped the smaller one... speaking of... I haven't signed into that account in years... wonder what the limits are on it now lol.

I believe all he said was "sin-n-dex". Not my real name or any details. He did say that he was participating in helping me with stamp sales (and briefly described what he was doing with that), and that he'd been doing that since January.
