Unresponsive buyer

Hi, I just started as a seller so I wanted to ask some questions about a buyer. They purchased my item on Christmas and it was picked up by usps the next day. After it was picked up, the buyer sent me a message asking for cancellation or a refund because their daughter purchased without permission and that they were going to dispute with Amex. I tried to contact them afterwards but they wouldn’t respond to any of my solutions like partial refund for package interception fee. eBay also never notified me about any payment disputes. The buyer isn’t replying at all so I’m not sure what the best move is. Can you help me?

Ignore and Hope they either changed their mind or can't get anywhere with their credit card and the problem goes away. Just deal with it if they open a return case or a payment dispute.

Thank you! I wasn’t sure if I should just let it play out or if I should process a package interception by myself before it gets delivered tomorrow and in the worst case scenario the buyer opens a dispute asking for a refund without returning the item.

Just hang tight for now.  You did everything correctly. A buyer paid for your item, & you promptly shipped the item. Now, the buyer can always open up a return request & you will have to respond accordingly. If the buyer goes the AMEX/financial institutiton route, then again just hang tight & provide any proof when requested.

Good luck!

@artyi12

New sellers who sell expensive items right off the bat are prime targets for scammers.  You also don't accept returns?  I would hope you would change that policy because no returns on eBay does not mean no refunds and even still they can do chargebacks on the CC/ Paypal.  When you don't accept returns, the buyer is not obligated to return the item.  I hope this plays out in your favor, however I am doubtful.

Thank you for the reassurance! I’ll probably post again if the buyer does open a return request

I would immediate go to USPS and do "package intercept" before item gets delivered.   When customer goes to credit card company to "reverse payment" (customer keeps BOTH your money + your item).   This is a game many scammers play.

Sorry but EBAY will not help you if you get scammed and has no control of credit card company.

That’s what I’m confused about. Should I get the item back or should I wait for it to be delivered

If it is an expensive item, I would intercept it now. Time is a wasting. These kinds of claims have a way of the buyer ending up with the item and also getting their money back. Do an intercept now. And then cancel. Do not let it get delivered and the buyer then claim it was an empty box or a brick in the box.

I feel you should message once more and advise them to just either "return to sender" when it arrives, or open a "ordered by mistake" return request. Then just leave it alone.

If they try to do a chargeback through their credit card after it is delivered, Ebay should contact you and you can upload tracking to show delivery. Just keep things simple.

I will say a scammer targeting you as a new seller with an expensive item.

When a buyer asks for a refund while package is in transit, that is a red flag! Do not refund!

The big red flag is 'After it was picked up, the buyer sent me a message asking for cancellation or a refund because their daughter purchased without permission and that they were going to dispute with Amex. Seems to me they were watching tracking the whole time and then contacted you after USPS had it in their possession.

Let this play out as others have posted. I'm sure others will chime in with additional helpful advice.

Hope you shipped with signature required. That always weeds out the crooked buyers.

If the buyer wants to play this game with you I would inform them that they are responsible for their daughters transaction and to return the package after they receive it by having it marked return to sender. If they go the chargeback route, I would inform them that they are committing fraud and you will deal with this by contacting the proper authorities. You can also forward the communication to their employer.

The item is expensive because it is a collectible piece. Maybe I should request package interception?

The hardest thing is that the buyer won’t respond anymore, so I don’t know what they want

When you don't accept returns, the buyer is not obligated to return the item.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

The buyer has to return an item (something) if the seller issues a return label.

The seller return policy does not negate the requirement.
