USPS hasn't delivered item. What next?

Sold an item on 1/27.

Shipped on 1/28.

Item last scanned on 2/3, and listed as "in transit."

The buyer opened a case, and I have provided tracking details twice.

I called CS today, and was told I "shouldn't do anything," and that the ball is essentially in the buyer's court.

I said that didn't seem fair, and was told I should tell the buyer to contact eBay herself.  I did, but didn't feel good about it.

The CSR was very vague about how eBay will handle this, or if I will be "on the hook" for the cost of the item.

How should I proceed?  Should I just wait?  Should I file a claim with USPS now?

I don't like leaving buyers hanging.

If the buyer has Buyer Protection - which a Buyer may lose if too many cases opened for shady reasons - then it is most likely that eBay will reimburse her for the loss. Have you tried to call USPS CS, too?

Best of luck

USPS hasn't delivered item. What next?

Thanks PW-

That's interesting.  I wonder if the CSR knows something I don't & wasn't just encouraging me to be a cruddy seller.  She was surprisingly adamant that I shouldn't do anything, which I found odd.

I haven't contacted USPS yet, but will talk to someone tomorrow.  I was just wondering if it's premature to file an insurance claim.

Maybe just give eBay a bit more time?

If the buyer didn't get their item by the estimated delivery date Ebay gave them and tracking doesn't show the item has been delivered, they will probably refund buyer from your Pay Pal account.

Have a great day.

The reason @sowseararts is if the item files a refund request, eBay will look at the buyer: If the buyer has not moved in 5 days for a domestic shipment, or 10 days for international, eBay considers the buyer lost, and refunds the item.

Because if the seller is all "adam ant" and takes action beforehand, e.g. refunds, eBay loses the FVF.

You are welcome. It is entirely possible that, in case ground shipment was involved, the truck was in an accident and some or most of the packages got burned up or otherwise destroyed. We haven't had a major airplane crash of transportation companies in years, thank God for that, but a few years ago, I believe not just one but two cargo airplanes went down, both were operated by UPS (I would need to read up on the exact facts, and currently too tired to do so). But this, the road accident, is happening more frequently and might explain why the tracking stopped, all of a sudden. Another possibility is that the package was stolen, or that it was simply not scanned - but in this latter case, it should have reached your buyer anyways and get a Delivered scan by the postman /-woman. Best of luck

You can open a case with USPS online now. it's quick and they respond with a written email in 48 hours . I find they are very thorough. Maybe it is stuck somewhere in transit, hopefully thats the case. This way you will have a written document you can upload easily if you need to.

@sowseararts Sometimes the advice given by customer service is not beneficial. Sometimes it can be harmful.

In this case, I would be all over the USPS to locate the package. You can call the post office in the buyer's location, or go to or call your local postmaster. The information they have is greater than what you can access online, and they often have important additional details.

When a package is running late, it is helpful to keep in touch with the buyer to prevent an Item Not Received case being opened. (When you referenced the open case, I am assuming that is the INR claim.) If you are calling eBay, it should be to request an extension of the case to give the package a few more days to arrive before you are forced to refund. Then use that time to investigate with the postal service.

What explanation did the CSR give you that entailed the buyer contacting eBay? There is no reason for the buyer to do so. And "doing nothing" is absolutely the opposite of what needs to be done. Once the Item Not Received case is opened, the clock starts ticking towards the refund you will be required to give-- you only have 3 business days to resolve the issue (.ie. give the refund or prove delivery). After that time, the buyer can ask eBay to step in to resolve the problem. If eBay gets involved, they will force the refund if the tracking does not show delivery, and your account could be given a black mark, called a defect. Your Final Value fees are not credited, you will be expected to pay them as a penalty. That is why it is imperative that eBay not step in to fix the issue, that you must do it yourself.

Below is the link to your responsibilities and next steps to take when an Item Not Received claim is invoked. Sorry you didn't get that info when you called CS.
