USPS Signature Confirmation

I have ran into a somewhat tough issue. I recently sold an item valued at $300 and shipped via priority mail. At my discretion, I added signature confirmation for peace of mind, even though eBay and Paypal only require it for $750 and up. According to USPS, no authorized recipient was available to sign for the package. I messaged the buyer twice on both eBay and their Paypal email adress to inform them about the situation and has not responded nor has made an attempt to schedule a redelivery or pickup. My issue is that I need the funds quickly and may have to request an early return of my item from USPS if the buyer does not respond. My questions are as follows:

  1. If the item ends up being returned to me, will I be charged for return postage?
  2. How will I go about refunding the buyer in this case?
  3. Will Paypal and eBay still charge me for the transaction fee and the final value fee respectively?
  4. What can I do to prepare in case I get hit with a INR claim or chargeback?

Thank you in advance, I have not dealt with an issue like this since I started selling.

Online signature confirmation was not necessary.  And unless you listed it in your description to give the buyer a heads up it was probably inconvenient as most people work and are not home during the day.

You need to give this more time.  Many need to wait until Saturday when they are home to reschedule delivery or have time to pick it up at the post office.

Also, I would be careful about using those funds prematurely.  Buyers have 6 months to return items and get their money back.

USPS Signature Confirmation

Thank you for the advice on not needing signature confirmation, it was my first time using it. I plan to hold the funds until either the buyer receives the item or I receive it back, in which case I will immediately refund.

Since buyers have 6 months to change their mind, make sure you have backup funds to cover this amount to prevent your account from going negative.
