USPS Priority Mail Labels

Hi everyone and thank for previous help, I have been slowly listing and selling my collection of stuff.

I have upgraded some of my boxes to the USPS EBay branded boxes, must nicer than what I started with.

When I was ordering some of these boxes I noticed that they also had stick on label, where I have been printing on paper and taping it on.

But I not sure I can use them with EBay as they are only 4" x 5" and when printing with EBay it a full 8" x 10" sheet with about half use for the label and the other half instructions and record.

So does anyone use these and am I missing something or do I just need to continue to do it the way I has been?

Thanks, AcGolfer

USPS Priority Mail Labels

The USPS-supplied adhesive labels are not in the same format as the online prepaid labels. They are intended ONLY for hand-written labels without postage. There's no space to print the postage on the decorated label.

However, at any office supplies store you can purchase sheets of labels in various formats. The usual format is 2 labels per 8.5 x 11 sheet. The problem is that the online receipt also prints on the adhesive portion so you waste an expensive label!

Normally, I hand-write mailing labels, take packages to the PO and pay for postage at the counter. (I don't own a printer.) However, last week I was working in an office where I had access to a computer and printer, so I printed a couple of eBay prepaid labels on plain paper. In the standard "landscape" mode, the resulting label is rather small but at least the destination name and address is readable.

My first prepaid label also included a 2976 Customs form so the font size for the Customs information was really tiny. I chose to drop the international package off at the PO, rather than leave it for the private courier service that picks up the office mail. As I understand it, international packages have to be presented directly to a USPS employee -- the courier driver just dumps and leaves, with no interaction. I also wanted to make sure that the designated weight of 2 lbs. was OK, since the package actually weighed about 12 ounces less. (It's OK -- the First Class postage amount to Europe covers 9 oz. to 32 ounces.) Another issue was whether the PO 2 blocks from the office would accept a different "mailed from" zip code -- so I chose to take the package to the main downtown PO whose zip code is the same as my return address. Besides, riding the bus as I do, the downtown PO is on my way home and actually more convenient.

In addition, I wanted a printed acceptance receipt for my records, which the courier would not have obtained. The clerk cheerfully answered my questions, double-checked the package weight and issued a receipt. Of course, it might have helped that I also bought some stamps, whose purchase appears on the same receipt. No late-afternoon line at the PO either!

On Friday morning, I prepared a domestic prepaid label -- also on plain paper -- and changed the format to "portrait." This yielded a larger, more easily read label but meant that part of the receipt printed on a second sheet of paper. Not a big deal -- it was just the few lines that identify the buyer's eBay ID and the item title. (But I would not have wanted to waste 3 expensive adhesive labels to print a single label!)
The courier picked up the outgoing mail about 9:30 a.m. and my domestic package received its first scan at the main downtown PO about 1:30 p.m. Since I have worked in this particular office for many years, I already knew the courier always takes all the mail from his route to the downtown PO -- he has other stops to make before he reaches downtown 2 miles away.

Bottom line: USPS Priority Mail supplies do not include mailing labels suitable for printing online prepaid postage.

When printing, shrink them down to 80%.  That is how I manage to get labels on the eBay 6x4x4 boxes.  They should still scan fine shrunk down.

If it works, sell it. If it works well, sell it for more. If it doesn't work, quadruple the price and sell it as an antique.

And you can make them a little shorter even by cutting off the blank note space at the bottom, and the strip at the top with the USPS and eBay logos.

I guess I didn't phrase it correctly.
I got the free labels from the USPS web site when I ordered the boxes.
And the labels are only 4x5.

So I was wondering if there is a way I can use them with EBay or do they have a different one that I can use.
Or should I just stick with paper and tape.

Thanks Duchess, I guess I just stick with plain paper and tape, don't need to buy more supplies plus wasting half of it.

You can opt out of printing that useless half-page recipet/instructions.  On the label preparation page, there's a link  for printer preferences in the upper-right section of the page.

Thanks Partial, I'll try that the next time. Maybe I could tape the label to a full sheet of paper and run it thru the printer that way.

USPS Priority Mail Labels

I repeat. The USPS Priority Mail labels cannot be used for online prepaid postage. They are too small, horizontal and contain boldly printed graphics. On the other hand, online prepaid labels are larger, vertical and require blank space to include the postage and other details above the actual mailing address.

Shrinking the label size will not help. Necessary details will be obscured by the colorful graphics. Pasting the label onto a sheet of paper won't work -- part of the online label will print on the paper, part on the label's blank space and part on the graphics. The printer also will jam.

By the way, when I printed online prepaid labels the other day, I did not see any link for printer preferences. But I'll look again tomorrow when I print another label.

On the USPS website, one can purchase what the post office calls "eBay/PayPal Click-N-Ship Double Labels".  These are blank adhesive shipping labels.
