Two UPS issues back to back...

1.  Shipped an expensive item via UPS to the buyer's apartment.  I paid extra for "adult signature required".  They made three attempts, missed him each time. I even tried to have UPS redirect the package to a nearby "access point" (a place that holds packages so he can go and pick it up after hours), but UPS refuse. They claim "Postage was purchased through ebay so this is no an option".  So now the package is coming back to me.  I'll refund his money when I get it.  Do I qualify to get a refund of UPS shipping fees in this scenario? If so, how do I do that?  Thanks

2. Item shipped via UPS - $100 item.  Item arrived damaged.  Told buyer to start a return as damaged.  When I get it, i'll issue full refund.  Can I file an insurance claim with UPS? I did not pay for "extra" insurance - but i thought that all UPS packages come with $100 insurance for free?  And how do I file a claim?   Thanks!

Thank you in advance for the advice!

#1)

You do not qualify to get a refund on shipping fees. UPS won't refund you. Ebay won't refund you.

Did the listing say the item would be sent and require a signature?

Was the buyer aware that the item would require a signature?

Many buyers don't like when a seller sends something that requires a signature.

Many buyers work for a living, They are not home to sign for packages.

#2)

You can file an claim with UPS.

I'm not sure what your package was insured up to.

You will have to show that the item was properly packaged.

No offense to you, but if the item was damaged, it probably wasn't properly packaged.

No such luck in getting a refund from UPS for the shipping cost, they did try to deliver it to the address.

But you can deduct that amount from the refund once you get the item back.

If an item is damaged by UPS you needed to start the claim as soon as you were notified. Waiting until you get it back will most likely give UPS an out for not doing a claim. They always want pictures of the box the item was sent / received in and a picture of the label to which the damaged item was sent / received. If you don't have those it will be denied. A claim for UPS is done on their website. It is not easy but it can be done.

Hi.  #1.  Thanks.  Wasn’t sure, but not surprised.  Signature required was stated in description.  But I do signature required on all things valued over $100 that go to an apartment for protection from package  theft.  Buyer was aware.  He claims he was home during two of the three attempts. (I hear that a lot).

#2.  Makes sense, it was wrapped in bubble wrap with no room of movement inside.  But yes.  No doubt I could have done better.   I just filed the claim online,  fingers crossed.

1. No, you will not get a refund for shipping. That falls in the category of "cost of doing business".

2. You can try to file for insurance with UPS, but UPS are known to rarely pay, usually blaming the shipper for poor packaging.

Nice. Damage claims most times tend to be a battle with the carrier especially USPS. Glad to hear UPS stood behind their coverage. Curious did they refund the shipping cost as well?

They did for me.  Also fyi, I claimed the replacement cost of the item initially but  they only reimbursed the amount i sold it for.    I had to upload the final sale page to prove amount.

Yup.  Same for me.  Had to include final sale page but ups also reimbursed me for the postage too.
