True Vintage, eBay’s unwanted step-child.

SNEAKERS! Remember vintage, remember when eBay started back when Meg Whitman was doing it; can you even say vintage and know what you’re talking about?! eBay, it doesn’t feel like you’re concerned with sellers who specialize in true vintage. You want this to be Walmart, you want this to be Target, you don’t want eBay as a vintage marketplace.

True Vintage, eBay’s unwanted step-child.

I'm not sure that any two eBay sellers could even agree on a definition for "true vintage."

And I'm not going to even try.

Like any other corporation, it's ALL about the $$$.

It's sad when something special and/or unique gets caught up in corporate earnings.

All the investors want is their $$$ and nothing else matters...not that I blame them...this is what happens when companies are publicly traded, expect it.

True Vintage, eBay’s unwanted step-child.

Here are the statistics for some sellers that started discussions on Sunday 2/5/2023.
3,967 Active listings with 2.6% sold/month
3,361 Active listings with 0.2% sold/month
2,622 Active listings with 1.1% sold/month
They each think that if eBay did something differently, they would sell at a faster rate.
They need to sell different items in other categories, going forward.

Vintage is the misunderstood word on eBay, every time it comes up every person has a different opinion of what it means. Even dictionaries define it differently and most of the time associated with a age over a certain period of time.

The actual definition is an item produced "at the time" , an example would be a "vintage Grateful Dead Tour T-shirt" it could mean a tour shirt from 1968, or 1978 or 1988 but would NOT include a shirt for the 1968 tour that was made AFTER 1968.

When you post a message on these Boards, you're not addressing eBay, its management or its employees.  "eBay, it doesn't feel like you're concerned with sellers who specialize in true vintage."

I have to agree with winebreath- there are too many listings of new products with "vintage look".  It makes it very difficult for the buyer looking for an old piece.  It would be nice if eBay had a "EBay Vintage" branch, similar to etsy, where items have to be at least 25 years old to be listed.

Absolutely correct.   Vintage means "year" (orginally referring to wine) and the word is meaningless without a year. "That's a vintage 1963 Underwood Typewriter."   Circa indicates an approximate date. "That house was built circa 1900."

But on eBay, vintage means anything any seller wants it to mean.  Sellers use the word to describe everything from shopworn dregs from the dollar store, to exquisite goods that are 90 years old, and everything in between.  Heck, they even use "vintage style" to describe brand new stuff.  (Whatever the heck "vintage style" could possibly be.)   On eBay, the word vintage conveys no information whatsoever.
