Too many phantom buyers..

Has anyone use been having issues with people bidding or making Best offers and not pay? I’ve been getting at least 2 a week. It’s frustrating when others are viewing your item and then it’s unavailable till I’m Again after 4 days or so. eBay needs to allow us sellers to leave negative feedback for so called “buyers” so we can warn other sellers.

If you search these forums you will see hundreds of posts from sellers having problems with non-payment, and hundreds of posts from sellers who are not having problems with non-payment.

And if you search these forums you will finds hundreds of posts from sellers wanting to leave negative feedback for buyers, and hundreds of posts explaining why it would not work.

Most sellers will suggest that the only real solution is to stop accepting offers and stop running auctions, and start listing at fixed price with immediate payment required.

I don't do auctions or best offer, so I don't have that problem.

My buyers pay when they buy and it works fine for me.

As far as warning other sellers, cancel the order on day 5 for nonpayment and most sellers will have them blocked if they have 2 unpaid item strikes in a year.

Have a great day.

Since you do not offer auction listings or best offer do you think this helps your business and sales?

Hello,

Once the item is determined not to be sold and not paid I cancel the sale.  The item shows up in my "sold and shipped file".  Ebay asks me to leave feedback for the buyer (who did not pay).  I leave positive "negative

feedback".  Don't forget to block them from ever doing it again, although they will just come back with a different name.

BEWARE!  THIS BUYER BIDS ON ITEMS AND DOES NOT PAY! NO GOOD!

Other people on Ebay browsing through this person's feedback record will get the message.

It's the best we can do in the meantime.

@betsybabe

What reason are you choosing when you cancel these transactions? If you are waiting four full days and cancelling on the fifth day of nonpayment, you're giving the member a nonpayment strike on his/her account. Most savvy sellers have their buyer preferences set to block any member with two or more strikes in a twelve-month period--the most restrictive block.

If you do not give the buyer a strike, you're not doing anyone any good.

If you are cancelling reason other than nonpayment, it's an abuse of the cancellation policy and a violation of eBay rules.

"Positive 'negative feedback'" is also a violation of eBay's feedback policy.

It seems you are more than willing to violate several eBay policies and are even willing to go so far as to recommend that other sellers do the same.

I would never buy from a seller who posted a negative comment for a buyer--and keep in mind that BUYERS are much more likely to look at YOUR feedback left for others than a seller is to look at a buyers feedback.

Your post is just bad advice all the way around.

You've just admitted to violating eBay's Feedback Misuse Policy on a public forum. Bad idea.

What is the policy?

Any misuse of feedback is not allowed. Feedback comments should match the positive or negative rating that was given in both buyer and seller feedback. For example, a negative comment should not be left with a positive rating.

Sellers cannot leave negative feedback for buyers, and eBay will never go back to allowing them to. You've received very bad advice from the last two posters. DO NOT leave negative comments in a positive rating.

Instead, there are a number of ways a seller can reduce or avoid nonpaying customers. Perhaps you've already relied on a couple of them, but here's a list of approaches you can utilize:

  • List all items as fixed-price, immediate payment required. Do not list with the auction format.
  • Remove the "best offer" option from your listings or decline each offer manually--no matter how tempting it appears.
  • Make sure to use the new cancellation process for members who don't pay within four full days (cancel on day five). A strike for nonpayment will be recorded on their account. The cancellation process can be done manually or you can set it to cancel for you automatically.
  • Set your Buyer Requirements to block any member with two or more strikes in the last twelve months--the most restrictive setting.
  • Add the member id to your Blocked Buyer List.

Utilizing these tools will help eliminate unpaid transactions.

eBay is rolling out a process that requires immediate payment on offers, as announced in the 2022 Winter Seller Update and the 2022 Spring Seller Update, both of which can be accessed on the Seller News board when posted and on the Seller Update Archive after some time has passed. It's in your best interest as a seller to keep abreast of this Seller Updates.

Cancelling an unpaid transaction in accordance with the new cancellation policy will do much more to eliminate nonpaying members and won't be violating any eBay policies.

I don't know if it helps or hurts, but I don't worry about it.

Have a great day.

So you think it's ok to violate policies?

All the buyer has to do is report the feedback and get the comments removed, but keep the positive and you would get hit with a policy violation.

Have a great day.

It won't when the buyers report the feedback.

Have a great day.

When I wrote that comment, I was thinking of something else. Should have never posted it. For me I have never cancelled an order or left negative feedback for a seller. I was referring to sending emails to buyer's that do not pay.

I spoke out of turn on that matter. I have never cancelled an order or left negative feedback to a buyer.  I was referring to something completely. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

So over 5K FB here and you are unaware that you're breaking the rules?

Those buyers for whom you left that positive negative FB should have contacted eBay and gotten it removed.

You would then have a defect for each of the pos/neg that you've left.
