I have a question about the MPN field.
For instance most remote controls were originally shipped with many different models.
It's it fine to place all the appropriate manufacturer model numbers associated with a particular remote in that field?

For instance a Sony rm-u302 remote was supplied with the following models
HTW700, STRSE481, STRV200, STRSE581, STRDE425, HTD600, SEN581CD, STRDE325, STRV220, STRDE326, STRSE381
So placing those model numbers in MPN
So someone searching for a remote for their STRV200 but they don't know what the actual model number on their remote was would find the correct remote.

I believe MPN is manufacturer part number. So models that that particular remote will work with is not really appropriate. The model number of that remote should go there.

MPN is the manufacturer part number - it's on the actual unit and isn't the model number.
I sell remotes and never use the MPN - just the model number itself as that is what people will be looking for. Compatibility (other models) can be mentioned in the description or the condition box.

This it what it says for MPM on eBay when making a new listing
Manufacturer Part Number (MPN) is a product identifier given by the manufacturer, can be the same as the model number, part number, or style code. Characterized by a combination of numbers, letters, and/or symbols.
The problem with Compatibility is info put here is not searchable with ebay search.
If a buyer has a TV (with a lost remote) and they look at the model on the back of it and look on ebay for a remote for their TV model and search "tv model remote". They will only get a result if a seller put that tv model in the title, mpn, or model field. Description appears to be a searchable field only after a using a checkbox that is unchecked by default.

Yes, they lump it together whether it's right or not (a lot of the old tech I sell has both an MPN and a model number, and I don't mix the two - I think it's kind of a sloppy definition, but I just sell the stuff). I understand what you're saying about trying to make compatibility searchable. The MPN box doesn't really take a lot of characters even if I wanted to try to adapt it for compatibility, even if I thought it would be searchable - guess it would be an interesting experiment.
Looks like I've run out of remotes, but here is a sold listing - you can see what I've done.

I guess what I'm cautioning is to be careful that the model is clear.

The MPN box is limited to around 30-40 characters but you can add about 20 additional lines to it.

Whoa! OK, thanks for telling me that! I've used that box a fair amount but didn't know it had that capability, and I've listed and sold a lot of old tech. I'll experiment around with it next time.
My main point is, though, to make it very clear to your buyers what MODEL you're selling - your using a posting ID means I can't see experience, what you sell or anything else, so I have no idea if you're new at this or not, so don't want to tell you something you already know.

Ya I always put the model in the title and in the model field. Like your listings. If compatible models fit in the title they go there at the end. Otherwise I put them in mpn.

The main reason I posted was because I saw this thread.
I think this has to do with someone adding a bunch of brands to compatible brands. So it got me thinking maybe using MPN might have an issue with adding compatible models. I know it's a completely different situation in that thread though.
