Stronger Browser Security Standards (HTTPS)

Starting today, you will see changes on eBay item description pages that contain non-compliant HTTP content. Google Chrome has pushed their browser update which includes stronger security standards. As a result, eBay will be adding a "see full item description" button to all listings that contain non-compliant HTTP content.

This new experience will look very similar to the way mobile buyers already see listing descriptions today. It also ensures that we comply with the Google mandate and prevents your buyers from seeing a “Not Secure” warning when they’re shopping on eBay

Please review our landing page for more information and tools to help you identify any of your listings that may contain non-compliant HTTP content.

EDIT 11/8/17 @ 12:23 PT

We are aware of an issue where the eBay HTTPS identification tool is showing listings that were revised to be HTTPS compliant after 10/31 as non-compliant. We are actively working on this issue and plan to have a quick fix for any new or revised listings. Any existing listings that have been updated to be HTTPS compliant but are still showing as non-compliant in the tool will continue to show as non-compliant until the listing is either revised or renewed. If you do not revise or relist, the issue will automatically correct after 30 days.

Please note that if your listings are compliant, they will show normally to buyers and have the “secure” message in the URL. You can confirm this experience by looking at the live listing. This issue is confined to our tool that identifies non-compliant listings, which is currently failing to update to show listings as compliant after you have updated your http content to be compliant.

We apologize for this issue and will update you here as soon as the issue is resolved.

Hi readabouthorses,

You may be seeing the button because the item wasn't compliant when it was listed, and the button 'stuck' with the listing until the listing completed. When the item is relisted, we'll re-check compliance and the button should disappear. It can take anywhere from 1-10 minutes for the check to complete. If you still see the button after this time, please send the item ID and we'll review the issue.

Thank you!

Deb

These were listings that I checked with that i-ways thingy and they all checked out as being OK. Only when they went to Completed did that button show up so something Ebay did to the completed listings made them non-compliant .... or that stupid i-ways thingy isn't working correctly.

At this point I don't really care anymore.

I've looked at the codes of various "ended" items that have the button, many with no reason to have that button. I am wondering if the "ended" state simply has the button.

Another user had listings with an external stylesheet with embedded content. After repairing those stylesheets, nothing changed (obviously there was no reason for eBay to know anything had changed). The button remained. I assume that is because the listing was not revised to force a new evaluation.  The seller saw something else he thought could be the problem, bulk revised, and it fixed the issue and now he makes the erroneous claim that eBay was looking for "xyz". Of course, "xyz" had nothing to do with the issue.

So, can the bulk editor (BEAR) be used to force a rescan or must something actually be changed for the bulk editor to even work?

Hi shipscript,

Thank you for sharing this use case. You are correct, the item description must be revised in some way in order to trigger the re-evaluation on our side - a price or quantity change for example wouldn't trigger the re-evaluation.  The same is true whether the revision is for a single item, or for bulk revision through BEAR.

Thank you!

This really is completely unacceptable.  When I go back to a listing I've bought from, I now see the button  to display the full listing.  When I click it, a new window opens (that's NOT your decision since it overrides MY settings and desires) and I see ONLY the descripion, disconnected from all of the site basics such as seller name,  buy buttons, item condition and everything else.

An awful lot of very bad things have been done recently, but this may be one of the very worst and will almost certainly cost many sellers a lot of sales.

I called ebay once I noticed the issue.

They walked me through the bulk editor to find/replace http with https so I no longer have my descriptions hidden and they're all compliant.

Tested my listings and getting 0 results for HTTP, but I'm getting the clickable "description " link in SOME of my listings but not all of them. I use no hosting website, just short to the point descriptions. I went in and edited a few listings that I noticed had these "clickable description" links & some of the editing I did absoultely nothing just hit submit and the "clickable description" link on some were gone.  I tried bulk edit of all my listings doing pretty much nothing in the edit first & that didn't work. Really annoying and time consuming to have to go find each one that is jacked up!

I don't understand how to fix our listings at all.  My daughter knows some basic HTML and she set up our listing template.  We store header information where it says our store name and free shipping on every order and the footer info that is displayed at the end of each listing, explaining our policies/disclaimers/item condition definitions.  We store these items as graphics on our website (which we really aren't using for selling, it just links to all the ebay listings).  I tried (as an experiment) to change a couple of the 23 "http" mentions to "https" and then those items did not display at all.  I am not an IT person so I have no idea what to do.  I shouldn't have to be an IT person to sell on ebay!  It should NOT be this hard....it never was before this year!

@mynewfindstore
I looked at a few of your listings and they all seem to have a few http images namely the logo, free shipping, return policy. These images seem to be common in all of them and are being served over http from your site. You would need to have these available over https. Following are the steps you would need to follow fix the listings.

  • First ensure images are available over https. For this you would need to update your site to use https or you could upload these to the eBay picture gallery and use the https image links from there or use a third party image hostings which provides https link.
  • Next you would select the non-compliant listing in sellerhub. They can be found here.
  • Use the bulk edit tool to replace each http image link with its corresponding https image link.

The complete guide on securing your listings is here - How to secure your listing

You can find all your non-compliant listings in one place in seller hub - https://www.ebay.com/sh/lst/active/http-content
Then follow the same bulk edit process after selecting the non-compliant listings. Inititally I would suggest starting with few and then once your are confident go for more.

Hi readabouthorses,

Thank you for sharing your findings, I can understand why this could be concerning, and have shared this feedback with the team. Will keep you updated on any progress on this front.

Thanks!

Hi readabouthorses,

Thank you for the additional context.  Could you please provide sample item numbers for listings you're seeing this issue for? We'd like to review in an effort to resolve this.

Thanks!

These are my only completed listings currently showing and all 3 of them have the View Item Button and all of them were previously checked with i-ways as being totally compliant when they were live listings.

Just another company caving to Chrome's domineering practices. This is really annoying. I'm not willing to pay a bunch of money for an SSL certificate just so I can host a few images for eBay. I liked being able to use the same hosting that I use for my website. Since I can't do that anymore, that's one less reason to stick with selling on eBay vs Amazon. The new "See full item description" button takes users to an entirely new tab, with no way to get back to the main site without closing the tab it just opened. It's not user-friendly at all and can be especially confusing to older folks who aren't as used to tabbed browsing and computers in general.

Will corporate be compensating buyers who are unable to read full descriptions or who feel they have been mislead by these changes?

I am no longer ceratin that information I'm seeing is part of the listing or not since it is being forced (against my better judgement) to open in a new window and does not contain the typical corporate links at the top of the page.

Hi readabouthorses,

Thank you for the item numbers. These items ended on our around Oct 10, before we turned on 'one-click away' option, which seems to be the root cause for your seeing the button despite those items being revised to be compliant. We checked  listings that ended yesterday or today, and the button is not showing for those listings. Here are a couple item IDs we checked for your reference: 272892843547, 152750122029.  Please let us know if you see other issues, and we'll be happy to review.

Thanks!
