So, how does case end when buyer opens after you've refunded them 50%?

As the title said- buyer purchased, ruined the product rendering it unresell-able (after market vehicle part) after opening a 'does not fit' return. I was fine with buyer stating 'does not fit' (although 11 years and 500+ sales says otherwise) so I refunded 50% only because it came back in the condition that it did (Product comes with a protective factory direct pvc coating and explicit instructions that states to 'CHECK FITMENT BEFORE REMOVING FACTORY PVC COATING' as the #1 instruction among 4 other instructions on using).

What happens now that buyer opened a 'case' in the resolution center?

What is the point of the 50% return ability if buyers can just open a case?

Maybe I'm confused, but they lose the case. They initiated a return, returned it, then you refunded less than 100% due to the condition of the return.

I think this is the end of it.  I don't know what kind of case they can open. Did they escalate an existing return? I don't have direct experience with that, but if you're a TRS with the ability to issue partial refunds, then  you are allowed to exercise that discreation. I don't know what a buyer could say to reverse a partial refund under these circumstances, but ebay does warn sellers "not to abuse" this power, so I would use it sparingly. When you use it though, you can probably expect ebay will back you up.

There was a post up last night that was explaining the same concern and frustration - They sent the buyer an 80% refund and very shortly thereafter, the buyer filed something and a new claim was open and within a days time ebay found in favor of the buyer to the tune of $75+ according to the post...Unsure how it works myself but I was quite confused to read it thinking the same thing..."What is the point of the 50% return ability if buyers can just open a case?" - Good luck - looks like ebay is gradually moving to just throwing their sellers to the wolves while they let the wolves run wild...

Sounds like your buyer wanted a full refund rather than the partial you sent them so now they are looking for the other half.

UPDATE: the case was already solved & closed. The buyer got his other 50%, but not from me, from ebay. This is only the 2nd time since TRS 50% deal can be used have I used it, both times- the buyer cries (able to open a case, how- beats me?????) and ebay pays them the 'other half'. Supposedly this will not 'effect' me, but I think this is ridiculous.

Cliff notes: Buyer damages, buyer returns (and shouldn't), buyer cries, TRS seller gives 50% back with pictures of damage, and buyer gets the other 50% returned to them. Amazing......
